A Final Embrace of the Desert

As the sun began its ascent, casting a golden hue over the dunes, I found myself reflecting on our final day in the enchanting Merzouga Region. It's hard to believe our Sahara adventure is coming to an end. This journey has been a tapestry woven with the threads of Berber culture, the vastness of the desert, and the warmth of the Moroccan people. I'm so glad Jan and I decided to immerse ourselves in this unique landscape; it's a stark contrast to our quiet life in Warsaw, surrounded by books and the gentle rhythm of library life.

Our day began, as most days here do, with the promise of the desert sun. We savored our last breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Zahra. The simple pleasure of strong coffee and fresh bread, enjoyed in the crisp morning air, was a perfect start. It's funny how the most ordinary things can become extraordinary when experienced in a place like this. I made a mental note to try and recreate the mint tea when we return home, a small token to remind us of the Sahara's gentle mornings.

With a sense of both excitement and melancholy, we prepared for our final exploration of the area. Our first stop was revisiting the 'Merzouga top itinerary'. We spent some time simply absorbing the panoramic views, letting the vastness of the Sahara sink in. It's a humbling experience to stand amidst such natural grandeur, a feeling that puts life's everyday worries into perspective. Jan, ever the history enthusiast, pointed out the ancient trade routes that once crisscrossed this very landscape. It's fascinating to think of the caravans laden with goods, traversing these dunes centuries ago.

The desert is a book, each grain of sand a word, each dune a chapter, telling tales of time, resilience, and the enduring spirit of life.

Next on our itinerary was a return to the Berber Camp Merzouga. We wanted to spend some time appreciating the unique culture and hospitality we'd experienced there. The Berber people have a deep connection to this land, and their traditions are woven into the very fabric of desert life. We sat with some of the locals, sharing stories and laughter, bridging the gap between our different worlds. I even attempted a few phrases in Darija, much to Jan's amusement and the locals' delight.

For lunch, we decided to try Snack chez Toufik. This cozy spot offered a delightful array of local dishes. I opted for the lamb tagine with raisins, a flavorful and comforting dish that perfectly captured the essence of Moroccan cuisine. Jan, always the more adventurous eater, tried a local specialty involving spices I couldn't even pronounce! We lingered over our meal, savoring each bite and soaking in the atmosphere of this bustling little eatery.

As the afternoon drew to a close, we sought a moment of quiet reflection at the Restaurant Berbere Palace Hotel Merzouga. While Jan enjoyed a traditional Moroccan mint tea, I savored a glass of local wine, watching the sun dip lower in the sky. The Berbere Palace, with its stunning architecture and serene ambiance, provided the perfect setting for contemplation. I thought about our daughter, Aoife, and how she would have loved to experience this magical place. Perhaps one day, we'll bring her here to share in the beauty and wonder of the Sahara.

Our final evening was spent at 'Welcome to the desert'. The name says it all. The starlit sky was so clear and vast. The silence, broken only by the gentle strumming of Berber music, was profound. We sat around a crackling fire, sharing stories with fellow travelers from all corners of the globe. It was a reminder that, despite our different backgrounds and beliefs, we are all connected by our shared humanity and our love for exploration. I felt a pang of sadness knowing that this magical experience was coming to an end, but also a deep sense of gratitude for the memories we had created.

I'm finding it hard to believe that tomorrow we will be heading back to Marrakech, and then onwards to Warsaw. While I miss the familiar comforts of home, I know that a part of me will forever remain in this captivating desert. The vastness of the Sahara, the warmth of the Berber people, and the magic of the starlit skies have left an indelible mark on my soul. This journey has been more than just a vacation; it has been a transformative experience that has broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for the beauty and diversity of our world.

As I sit here now, penning these words in our cozy Berber tent, I can hear the distant rhythm of drums and the faint murmur of voices. The desert is alive tonight, pulsating with energy and mystery. I raise my glass to the Sahara, to the Berber people, and to the unforgettable memories we have created here. Until we meet again...

As our trip draws to a close, I'm already thinking about how I can incorporate some of the sustainable practices we've witnessed here into our daily life in Warsaw. From water conservation to supporting local artisans, there are many small changes we can make to live more consciously and responsibly. Perhaps I can even convince Jan to try brewing his own mint tea!

And so, with a mix of nostalgia and anticipation, we prepare to bid farewell to the mystical Merzouga Region. This journey into the Sahara has been a true adventure, a testament to the power of cultural exchange, and a reminder that the world is full of wonders waiting to be explored. I hope our experiences have inspired you to embark on your own journey, to step outside your comfort zone, and to discover the magic that lies beyond the horizon.
