Stepping into the Soul of Taroudant

After months of planning, our Moroccan adventure has officially begun! Today marked our arrival in Taroudant, a city often whispered about as the 'Grandmother of Marrakech.' I must admit, the allure of exploring a less-trodden path, away from the bustling tourist hubs, was irresistible. Maximilian and Elena would have loved to be here, but this trip with my girlfriends is something I have been looking forward to for a long time!

The journey here was quite straightforward. We flew into Agadir from Germany and then hopped into a taxi for the ride to Taroudant. As we approached the city, the first thing that struck me was the imposing red-earth ramparts that encircle the entire town. They stood tall and proud, whispering tales of centuries past. The August sun beat down, but the excitement of finally being here overshadowed any discomfort.

Our first stop was 20 August Place. It is a bustling square that truly captures the essence of Moroccan life. The square was alive with activity. Locals gathered to socialize, vendors were selling everything from handcrafted jewelry to colorful textiles, and the aroma of spices filled the air. I couldn't resist snapping a few photos of the vibrant scenes unfolding before my eyes. The architecture surrounding the square was beautiful, adorned with palm trees that provided welcome shade from the sun. We found a cozy café and sipped on traditional mint tea, watching the world go by. It was the perfect introduction to Taroudant's laid-back charm.

Next, we ventured towards Bab Targhount, one of the ancient gates that guard the city. As we approached, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer size and intricate design of the gate. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining the caravans and traders that would have passed through here centuries ago. The gate led us into the heart of the medina, where a maze of narrow streets awaited us.

For lunch, we decided to try Café Restaurant Roma, recommended by our taxi driver. It turned out to be a delightful choice! The café had a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I ordered a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, and it was bursting with flavor. My friends opted for some grilled meats, and they were equally impressed. Of course, we had to try the refreshing mint tea, a staple in Moroccan culture. The prices were very reasonable, making it a great spot for a satisfying and affordable meal.

Sometimes, the most authentic experiences are found in the simple moments, like sharing a meal and a cup of tea in a bustling local café.

After lunch, we explored the souks, the traditional markets of Taroudant. The souks were a sensory overload in the best way possible. We wandered through stalls piled high with spices, textiles, leather goods, and argan oil products. The vendors were eager to show us their wares, and we enjoyed haggling for a few souvenirs. I managed to snag a beautiful handmade rug for a great price, a perfect reminder of our trip. My friend bought some spices to bring back home, hoping to recreate some of the delicious Moroccan dishes we've been trying.

We also stopped by De Velasco Boutique, a charming haven known for its exquisite selection of handcrafted Moroccan goods. The boutique was filled with vibrant textiles, intricate ceramics, and unique jewelry. Each piece reflected the traditional craftsmanship of Moroccan artisans. I was particularly drawn to the handmade rugs and the beautifully crafted pottery. The staff were knowledgeable and shared stories about the items and their origins. It was more than just shopping; it was about connecting with the local culture and supporting the artisans.

As evening approached, we made our way to Complexe El Kasbah for dinner. This restaurant offers a panoramic view of the Atlas Mountains and the palm trees of Taroudant. The menu was extensive, featuring local and balanced dishes, as well as wood-fired pizza. I decided to try the couscous, while my friends enjoyed the grilled meats. The atmosphere was lively, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Taroudant.

The menu featured traditional Moroccan dishes prepared with fresh, local ingredients. I enjoyed a leisurely breakfast, savoring the warm atmosphere that characterizes Moroccan dining. It was a great start to our day, fueling us for more exploration.

One thing I did forget to pack was my sunglasses, and I’m already regretting it under the strong Moroccan sun! I will definitely need to pick up a pair tomorrow.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit Palais Claudio Bravo and Taroudant's Gardens. I've heard so much about the palace's stunning architecture and the gardens' tranquil beauty. We're also planning to try a local bar called Le Moulin de Taroudant in the evening. I am really looking forward to seeing what Taroudant has in store for us!

Taroudant has already captured my heart with its authenticity and charm. It’s a refreshing change from the more touristy cities, and I can’t wait to delve deeper into its culture and history over the next few days. Stay tuned for more updates on our Moroccan adventure!
