A Day of Moroccan Delights

Today was a beautiful blend of art, history, and, of course, delicious food. Taroudant continues to surprise me with its hidden gems and authentic charm. I’m so glad I decided to venture off the beaten path and experience this side of Morocco with my friends. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel, explore, and share these experiences with all of you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Achkid café. The café had a cozy atmosphere, adorned with traditional Moroccan decor that immediately made us feel at home. I ordered a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea, which was the perfect way to kickstart our day. The staff were incredibly friendly, adding to the overall welcoming vibe of the place. It's always a pleasure to start the day in such a warm and inviting setting. Maximilian would have loved this place; he always appreciates a good cup of mint tea.

After breakfast, we set off to Dar Zahia, a guesthouse known for its tranquil ambiance and beautiful design. The riad was hidden behind an unassuming door at the end of an alley, which made it feel like discovering a secret oasis. The architecture was inspired by traditional Amazigh dwellings, with mud walls, traditional earthenware, rugs, and tapestries. The gardens were lovely, providing a serene escape from the bustling city. We spent a couple of hours wandering through the riad, admiring the intricate details and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. My friends and I couldn't resist taking photos at every corner. Dar Zahia truly felt like a tranquil and leafy haven, a calm retreat right in the heart of Taroudant.

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.

Next on our itinerary was Sucrerie Machraa al Ain, a historical site that once served as a sugar factory. It was fascinating to explore the ruins and learn about the area's industrial past. Though there isn't a lot of readily available information about this particular site, we pieced together its history through local stories and the remnants of the architecture. It was a humbling experience to stand in a place that once played a significant role in the region’s economy. The site offered a unique glimpse into Taroudant's past, reminding us of the layers of history beneath the vibrant present.

For lunch, we ventured to Snack Omar, a local eatery known for its authentic Moroccan flavors. We ordered a variety of dishes, including tagines and fresh salads, all prepared with local ingredients. The food was absolutely delicious, and the cozy setting encouraged friendly interactions with both the staff and other guests. It felt like we were getting a true taste of Moroccan life. Snack Omar is strategically located, making it a perfect stop after exploring the souks or historical sites. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes back in Bielefeld; Maximilian and Elena would surely enjoy them.

After lunch, we visited Amanies | Handmade Jewelry, a charming store that showcases the artistry of Moroccan craftsmanship. Each piece of jewelry reflected the vibrant culture and traditions of the region, crafted with meticulous attention to detail. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable, sharing insights into the materials and techniques used to create these exquisite pieces. I couldn't resist purchasing a beautiful necklace as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of our time in Taroudant. My friends also found some lovely pieces to take home. The store itself was warm and inviting, making it a perfect spot to immerse ourselves in the local culture.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to have dinner at SuchiCafé Restaurant Perla. Despite the name, this restaurant offers a delightful mix of Moroccan cuisine with a contemporary twist. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home. We chose to sit outdoors under the stars, enjoying the cool evening breeze as we savored our meal. The tagines were flavorful, and the fresh seafood was a real treat. SuchiCafé is definitely more than just a place to eat; it’s an experience that embodies the flavors and culture of Taroudant.
