A Day of Discoveries in Lucca

Today was a day of exploring Lucca beyond the well-trodden tourist paths, and it was absolutely magical. Maximilian and I set out with a sense of adventure, ready to uncover some of the city's lesser-known treasures. From ancient aqueducts to bustling piazzas, Lucca revealed its charm in unexpected ways.

Our morning began with a delightful breakfast at Old Charlie Lucca. Situated in Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, this charming spot offered the perfect start to our day. The reviews I had read highlighted their wonderful focaccia and bruschetta pizza, and I must say, they did not disappoint. Maximilian opted for a classic Italian breakfast of coffee and a pastry, while I indulged in their savory focaccia. The ambiance of the piazza, with its ancient Roman origins, added a special touch to our meal. It's fascinating how the circular layout has been preserved through the centuries, now lined with shops and restaurants.

After breakfast, we decided to explore the Acquedotto Nottolini. This impressive aqueduct, built in the 19th century, stretches for kilometers, bringing water to Lucca from the nearby mountains. Designed by Lorenzo Nottolini, it's a stunning example of neoclassical architecture. We walked along a section of the aqueduct, marveling at the arches and the serene landscape surrounding it. The August sun cast long shadows, creating a picturesque scene that felt like stepping back in time.

To walk through Lucca is to walk through layers of history, each stone whispering tales of centuries past.

The aqueduct isn't just a beautiful structure; it's a testament to Lucca's ingenuity in providing fresh water to its citizens. Maximilian, with his software engineering background, was particularly interested in the engineering aspects of the aqueduct. He kept remarking on the precision and foresight required to build such a structure in the 1800s. I, on the other hand, was captivated by the sheer elegance of the design, a perfect blend of form and function. Though no longer used for water supply, the Acquedotto Nottolini remains architecturally intact, serving as a monument to Lucca's rich history.

Next on our itinerary was Piazza del Duomo, the heart of Lucca's religious and cultural life. As we approached the piazza, the magnificent Cathedral of San Martino came into view. Its intricate façade and towering bell tower are truly breathtaking. We decided to step inside and were immediately struck by the grandeur of the interior. The cathedral houses numerous works of art, including the famous Volto Santo, a wooden crucifix that is said to have been carved by Nicodemus, who assisted in Christ's burial.

The atmosphere inside the cathedral was serene and contemplative. Sunlight streamed through the stained-glass windows, casting colorful patterns on the ancient stone floor. I lit a candle and offered a silent prayer, reflecting on the centuries of history contained within these walls. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, admired the architectural details, pointing out the Romanesque arches and the Gothic vaulting. He even managed to capture some stunning photographs, showcasing the cathedral's beauty in all its glory.

For lunch, we ventured to Ciacco, a local favorite known for its unique sandwiches and salads. Their sign outside proudly proclaims, No pasta. No pizza. No stress, which immediately intrigued us. Located near Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, Ciacco offers a refreshing alternative to the typical Italian fare. Maximilian chose a sandwich with porchetta, while I opted for a salmon salad. Both were incredibly fresh and flavorful, a perfect light lunch for a warm August day.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Premium, a clothing store on Via Fillungo. This bustling street is known for its high-end boutiques and independent shops. Premium stood out with its curated selection of stylish clothing and accessories. I found a beautiful silk scarf that I couldn't resist, while Maximilian picked up a new leather belt.

As we strolled along Via Fillungo, we soaked in the vibrant atmosphere. The street was filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the summer afternoon. We passed by charming cafes, artisan workshops, and historic buildings, each adding to Lucca's unique character. It's easy to see why this city is known for its premium quality shops and authentic businesses.

Before dinner, we took a leisurely walk along the city walls. These Renaissance-era walls are one of Lucca's most iconic features, offering stunning views of the city and the surrounding countryside. We joined the many locals who were walking, biking, and jogging along the walls, enjoying the cool evening breeze. From up high, we could see the red-tiled roofs of Lucca, the green hills in the distance, and the setting sun painting the sky in hues of orange and pink.

Our day culminated in a delightful dinner at Antica Locanda di Sesto, a restaurant located just outside the city center. This charming locanda is known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine and warm, inviting atmosphere. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by homemade pasta with wild boar ragu. For our main courses, Maximilian chose the grilled steak, while I opted for the roasted rabbit. Everything was cooked to perfection, bursting with flavor and authenticity.

The ambiance of Antica Locanda di Sesto was truly special. The rustic decor, the friendly staff, and the delicious food all combined to create a memorable dining experience. It felt like stepping into someone's home, a place where you could relax and savor the simple pleasures of life. The recommendation was spot on.

As we prepare for tomorrow's excursion to Forte dei Marmi and the Seacoast of Pietrasanta, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had here in Lucca. Tomorrow promises a change of scenery, with a visit to the coast. We plan to have breakfast at Ristorante Per 21, followed by lunch at Trattoria da Giulio, and dinner at Ristorante DES ARTS. And perhaps we'll end the day with a drink at Ciclo Divino. It's going to be another wonderful day of exploration and discovery. I'm particularly excited to see the beaches and maybe even dip my toes in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Back at Albergo San Martino, reflecting on our day, I realized how much Lucca has to offer beyond its famous landmarks. The Acquedotto Nottolini, Piazza del Duomo, Via Fillungo, and Antica Locanda di Sesto each provided a unique glimpse into the city's history, culture, and culinary scene. These hidden gems are what make Lucca such a special place, a destination that truly captures the heart and soul of Tuscany.

Before drifting off to sleep, I couldn't help but think about Elena and how much she would have loved running around the Piazza del Duomo. I made a mental note to bring her back here someday, so she too could experience the magic of Lucca.
