Day 7: Farewell to Shirakawa-go: Reflecting on a Week of Cultural Immersion
Somchai reflects on his Shirakawa-go adventure, exploring local crafts, savoring traditional meals, and cherishing every moment with his wife.
A Fond Farewell
As the sun began its ascent, casting a golden hue over the Gassho-zukuri farmhouses, I found myself reflecting on our final day in Shirakawa-go. It’s amazing how quickly a week can fly by when you’re immersed in such a captivating blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. This morning, with Nang by my side, I was eager to soak in every last moment of this serene village before we journeyed back to Montreal.
Our day began, as many had this week, with a delightful breakfast at Shirakawago Restaurant Irori. The aroma of grilled tofu and miso filled the air, beckoning us to our table. I opted for the Hida beef set, and Nang chose one of the vegan set meals; the staff were very helpful in identifying which options were suitable. Each bite was a reminder of the rustic and traditional flavors that define this region. I savor the deep, sweet, and nutty flavor of the hoba miso pork. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our last day of exploration.
The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new ways of life.
Our first stop was the Hida Earth Wisdom Center. This museum showcases the craftsmanship and culture of the Hida Takayama region, with a focus on furniture making. I was particularly impressed by the displays of woodworking techniques used in the construction of palaces and temples centuries ago. It's inspiring to see how these traditions have been passed down through generations, influencing even modern architecture. Nang, with her keen eye for detail, admired the intricate designs and the sheer artistry involved. I found myself contemplating the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the artisans, who used local materials to create functional and beautiful pieces.

Next, we ventured to Museum Hida, eager to delve deeper into the region's history. While smaller than the Earth Wisdom Center, it offered a more intimate look at local life and culture. We spent a good hour examining the exhibits, gaining a better understanding of the heritage of Shirakawa-go.

Our cultural immersion continued with a visit to Nezumita-mon Gate. Although the gate is actually located in Kanazawa (which we visited earlier in our trip) and was reconstructed in 2020, seeing it reminded me of the blend of history and restoration that characterizes much of Japan's cultural preservation efforts. The gate itself is a testament to the architectural prowess of the Edo period, and I found myself marveling at the intricate details and the sheer craftsmanship involved.

For lunch, we decided on Gassho, a charming spot known for its cozy atmosphere. Nang ordered the special ramen with its exceptionally thick soup base, while I decided to try a local sake. As we ate, we reminisced about our previous meals in Shirakawa-go, each one a unique culinary experience.
After lunch, we indulged in a bit of souvenir shopping at Memenko. Located near the Wada House, this shop offered a delightful array of local crafts and delicacies. Nang, always on the lookout for unique gifts, picked up several Sarubobo dolls – faceless monkey dolls that are believed to bring good fortune. I, on the other hand, was drawn to the local confectionery, Kintsuba, flavored with Doburoku sake. It was the perfect way to bring a taste of Shirakawa-go back home with us.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to a final dinner at Nomura. This soba noodle restaurant had been recommended to us by several locals, and it did not disappoint. The handmade soba was exquisite, and the friendly owners made us feel right at home. I opted for the classic cold soba with daikon, while Nang enjoyed a vegetarian option. The complimentary iced tea was a refreshing touch, especially after a day of exploring.

With heavy hearts, we returned to Shirakawago Onyado Yuinosho, our home for the past week. The ryokan had been a haven of tranquility, and we were grateful for the warm hospitality we had experienced. We packed our bags,整理整頓 and reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip.

As I reflect on our time in Shirakawa-go, I am struck by the profound sense of peace and serenity that permeates this village. The gassho-zukuri farmhouses, with their steep thatched roofs, stand as symbols of resilience and community. The lush greenery of the surrounding mountains provides a stunning backdrop, creating a landscape that is both breathtaking and humbling.
But beyond the picturesque scenery, it is the people of Shirakawa-go who have truly captured my heart. Their warmth, their hospitality, and their unwavering commitment to preserving their cultural heritage are an inspiration. I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared in their way of life, even if just for a short time.
As we prepare to leave, I know that Shirakawa-go will forever hold a special place in my memory. It is a place where time seems to slow down, where nature and culture intertwine, and where the simple joys of life are celebrated. I leave with a renewed appreciation for the beauty of traditional Japanese culture and a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we have shared with my wife.
While this marks the end of our Shirakawa-go adventure, it is not goodbye, but rather au revoir. I hope to return someday and continue exploring the hidden gems of this enchanting village. Until then, I will carry the memories of Shirakawa-go with me, cherishing the moments of cultural immersion and the bonds we have forged with the local community.
