Reaching New Heights in Chefchaouen

Today was a day of breathtaking views and cultural immersion in Chefchaouen. From conquering mountain trails to exploring ancient gates and savoring local cuisine, Nang and I experienced the true essence of this Moroccan gem. It's days like these that remind me why we embarked on this adventure, seeking to capture the heart and soul of each destination we visit.

Our day began with an early breakfast at Café Sindibad. We enjoyed some traditional Moroccan fare, fueling up for our ambitious hike. The café had a lovely view, which added to the experience, setting a positive tone for the adventures that lay ahead. I ordered mint tea, while Nang had coffee. We enjoyed the views of Chefchaouen while we planned our day.

Conquering Jebel El-Kelaa

The highlight of today was undoubtedly our hike to the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa. The trail was moderately challenging, but the panoramic views from the top were more than worth the effort. I wouldn't say I'm the fittest person, but I'm glad I didn't give up. The ascent took us through varied terrain, from gentle inclines to steeper, rocky paths. It was a good thing that I remembered to pack my comfortable hiking shoes! I had forgotten to pack a light jacket, but luckily, the weather was in our favor.

The world reveals its beauty to those who dare to climb.

As we climbed higher, the air became crisper, and the views of Chefchaouen below became increasingly stunning. The blue hues of the city contrasted beautifully with the rugged mountain landscape. We even encountered some friendly locals along the way, exchanging smiles and greetings.

Reaching the summit was an exhilarating experience. The 360-degree views of the Rif Mountains were simply awe-inspiring. Nang and I took plenty of photos, trying to capture the beauty of the moment. We sat there for a while, just soaking it all in and enjoying the tranquility. It's moments like these that make all the travel worthwhile.

The descent was just as rewarding, offering fresh perspectives of the region. By the time we got back to town, we were both tired but filled with a sense of accomplishment.

Exploring Bab El Ain

After our mountain adventure, we decided to explore Bab El Ain, one of the historical gates of the Medina. This gate is not just a physical structure; it's a window into Chefchaouen's rich past. It was fascinating to walk through this ancient gateway, imagining the countless people who had passed through it over the centuries. I read that Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a small Kasbah by Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami to defend against Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco. The city later became a refuge for Muslim and Jewish refugees from Al-Andalus, bringing with them their culture and traditions. Bab El Ain stands as a testament to this history, a silent witness to the ebb and flow of time.

As we strolled around Bab El Ain, we observed locals going about their daily lives, children playing, and artisans selling their crafts. It was a vibrant scene, full of life and energy. We stopped to admire the architecture, noting the intricate details and the unique blend of Andalusian and Moroccan styles. It's amazing to see how the past and present coexist in this magical city.

Culinary Delights

For lunch, we headed to Chez Foad, a local favorite known for its authentic Moroccan dishes. We ordered tagine and couscous, both cooked to perfection. The flavors were rich and aromatic, a true reflection of Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with locals, which is always a good sign. We enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff, learning more about the local culture and customs.

In the evening, we decided to try MIDO'S for dinner. This place came highly recommended for its delicious and affordable food. We were not disappointed. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and the menu offered a variety of options. I opted for a burger, while Nang chose a pasta dish. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and convivial. I loved how they happily veganize anything thats possible on their menu.

To cap off the night, we ventured to Bar Oum Rabie, known as the only place in town serving beer and wine. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with music and friendly chatter filling the air. We enjoyed some local wine, savoring the moment and reflecting on the day's adventures. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.
