Day 2: A Day Dipped in Blue: Exploring Chefchaouen's Soul
Discover the magic of Chefchaouen with me, from its serene waterfalls to its vibrant medina, as we paint the town blue with unforgettable memories.
Chefchaouen's Embrace
Today, Chefchaouen revealed its soul to me. It wasn't just about the blue hues; it was about the vibrant life, the serene landscapes, and the warm encounters that painted a vivid picture in my memory. Join me as I recount a day of delightful discoveries in this Moroccan gem.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Chez Aziz. Greta and I enjoyed traditional Moroccan fare, which set the perfect tone for our explorations. The rooftop terrace offered a stunning view of the town awakening, a moment of peace before the day's adventures unfolded. I had a great time chatting with the owner and he gave me some tips for the day. I am so glad that I remembered to bring my phrasebook, as I was able to dust off my French and have a basic conversation with him. Greta was very impressed, but I think she was more impressed with the breakfast.
Our first stop was Ras El Ma. The gentle sound of the water cascading down the rocks was incredibly soothing. I watched as local women gathered to wash clothes, their laughter echoing through the air. It was a simple scene, yet it captured the essence of daily life in Chefchaouen. The water was so refreshing, I dipped my toes in, a small act that connected me to the heart of this blue city.

The true beauty of a place lies not just in its sights, but in the stories and connections woven into its very fabric.
Next on our list was a walking tour with Blue Medina Tours. Our guide, Fatima, was a local with an infectious passion for her city. As we wandered through the labyrinthine alleys of the Medina, she shared stories of Chefchaouen's history and culture. She explained how the blue color, initially introduced by Jewish refugees, became a symbol of identity and unity for the town. The narrow streets, painted in varying shades of blue, were a photographer's dream. Every corner turned revealed a new, captivating scene, each doorway and archway a unique work of art. The Rif mountains provided a perfect backdrop, making the experience even more magical. I managed to pick up a couple of souvenirs and practice my haggling skills. I think I got some good deals, but Greta said I probably could have done better.

For lunch, we ventured to Café Restaurant Marisco Twins. The aroma of Moroccan spices filled the air as we sat down on the terrace overlooking Place Outa el Hammam. I savored a flavorful tagine, while Greta enjoyed a couscous dish. The food was delicious, but the real treat was watching the bustling square below. Locals and tourists mingled, creating a vibrant tapestry of cultures and languages. The cafe was really busy, but the staff were very attentive. I tried to order in Arabic, but the waiter just laughed and replied in English.

In the afternoon, we paid a visit to the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen. Although non-Muslims are not allowed inside, the exterior was impressive enough. Fatima told us about the mosque's history, dating back to the 15th century, and its importance as a center of community and faith. The octagonal minaret stood tall, a testament to the city's rich heritage. The mosque is located in the Place Outa Hammam, so it was easy to walk to after lunch.

As evening approached, we decided to unwind at Cafe Clock. The cafe's ambiance was cozy and inviting, with live music adding to the charm. I opted for a traditional mint tea, while Greta tried their famous camel burger. The rooftop terrace offered panoramic views of Chefchaouen bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun. It was the perfect way to reflect on the day's adventures. The Cafe Clock is a multi-level restaurant, so be prepared for stairs. I think I burned off all the calories from lunch getting to the top.

Before heading back to Riad Zaitouna Chaouen, we took a final stroll through the Medina. The blue streets took on a different character at night, illuminated by the soft glow of lanterns. The air was filled with the sounds of music and laughter, creating a magical atmosphere. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Chefchaouen had captured my heart with its beauty and warmth. I managed to buy a few souvenirs for Lila, hoping that she would like them. She is at the age where she is difficult to please.

Tomorrow, we are planning a day trip to Akchour and its famous waterfalls. I am looking forward to experiencing the natural beauty of the Rif Mountains and escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.
Chefchaouen, with its enchanting blue streets and vibrant culture, is a place that stays with you long after you leave. It is a reminder that the most beautiful destinations are those that touch your soul and leave you with unforgettable memories. The city is quite hot in August, so it is important to stay hydrated. I am glad that I brought my water bottle with me. The average temperature in Chefchaouen in August ranges from a high of 95°F (35°C) to a low of 69°F (20°C). I am really looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings. Perhaps I will buy Lila something from the Hibart Souvenirs Shop.
