Day 1: Lost in the Azure Alleys: My First Day in Chefchaouen
Discover the magic of Chefchaouen: Explore blue-washed streets, ancient kasbahs, and vibrant plazas with friends in Morocco's hidden gem.
A Blue Awakening in Chefchaouen
After months of anticipation, I've finally arrived in Chefchaouen, the Blue Pearl of Morocco! The journey here was an adventure in itself, flying from Berlin to Tangier and then winding through the Rif Mountains. Even though I managed to forget my power adapter and travel pillow, the excitement of exploring this unique city with my friends is more than enough to make up for it. From the moment we stepped through Chefchaouen Gate, I knew this trip would be one for the books.

Our first stop was the iconic Chefchaouen Gate. It was the perfect introduction to the city. The gate itself is impressive, but what struck me most was the vibrant atmosphere. Locals and tourists mingled, creating a lively buzz that was both welcoming and exciting. It felt like stepping into another world, a world painted in every shade of blue imaginable. We took some photos, trying to capture the essence of the moment, but I knew that no picture could truly do it justice.
After passing through the gate, we wandered into the heart of the city, making our way towards the Kasbah. Before exploring the Kasbah, we decided to grab a quick breakfast at Café Sindibad. I opted for some traditional Moroccan mint tea and a pastry. The mint tea was incredibly refreshing, and the pastry was sweet and flaky. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

The Kasbah, a historic fortress, was our next destination. This monument has been restored several times over the centuries. As we wandered through its corridors and climbed its towers, I couldn't help but imagine the stories it held. It has served as a residence for governors, a military arsenal, and even a prison. The structure itself is a testament to Moroccan architecture, with its sturdy walls and intricate details. The Kasbah offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains from the parapet on the terrace. The entry fee was 60 Dirhams, approximately 6€, for foreign tourists.

Wandering through Chefchaouen is like stepping into a dream, where every corner reveals a new shade of blue and a new story to uncover.
Inside the Kasbah, we visited the Ethnographic Museum, which provided a fascinating glimpse into Moroccan heritage. The museum housed a collection of artifacts, from musical instruments to pottery and traditional weapons. It was interesting to learn about the local culture and traditions, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for the city's unique identity.
Leaving the Kasbah, we made our way to Plaza Uta el Hamman, the central square of Chefchaouen. The plaza was bustling with activity, lined with cafes and restaurants. The square is a vibrant hub where you can immerse yourself in the local culture. The large tree in the center of the square provides a great meeting point before exploring the medina.

For lunch, we settled at Restaurant Bab Ssour. I decided to try a tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew cooked in a clay pot. It was savory and flavorful, filled with tender meat and vegetables. After lunch, we explored the shops surrounding the plaza, filled with colorful textiles, leather goods, and various souvenirs.

I was particularly drawn to the local crafts. Chefchaouen crafts are known for its woven blankets and wool garments, which are unique to this region of Morocco. I watched as artisans skillfully worked at their looms, creating intricate patterns and designs. I ended up buying a beautiful Berber rug, hand-painted ceramics, and other unique jewelry to take back home as a cherished souvenir.

Reflecting on the day, I am in awe of Chefchaouen's beauty and charm. The blue-washed streets, the historic Kasbah, and the vibrant Plaza Uta el Hamman have left an indelible mark on me. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, with plans to visit Ras El Ma, take a tour with Blue Medina Tours, and see the Grand Mosque of Chefchaouen. Perhaps we'll even find time to relax at Cafe Clock in the evening. For now, I'm content to soak in the memories of today and dream of the adventures yet to come. Good night from Chefchaouen!
Looking back on today, I realize how fortunate I am to share these experiences with my friends. Traveling together has strengthened our bond, and I know that these memories will last a lifetime. Chefchaouen has a charm unlike any other place I've visited. As I sit here writing, I am reminded of a quote I once read:
Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.
It is a reminder that there is so much to see and learn, and I am grateful for every opportunity to do so. I am already looking forward to exploring more of Chefchaouen tomorrow!
