Finding My Place in the Blue Pearl

Today was all about soaking in the atmosphere of Chefchaouen, a city that continues to enchant me with its azure hues and tranquil vibes. It’s amazing how a place can feel so familiar yet still hold endless surprises around every corner. From bustling squares to quiet moments with friends, today was a perfect blend of exploration and relaxation.

I started my day with a hearty breakfast at Café & restaurant Meftah. The warm sunlight was just beginning to bathe the blue walls of Chefchaouen as I sipped on strong Moroccan coffee. The café was already buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day in this magical city. I opted for a traditional Moroccan breakfast of eggs, bread, and olives, fueling up for a day of exploration. Greta always says I have to try the local cuisine, and she's absolutely right; it's one of the best ways to connect with a culture.

Sometimes, the most memorable moments are found in the simplest of settings.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to Plaza Mohammed V. This circular square, built by the Spanish army during the colonization period, is a charming spot with a central fountain and a flower garden. I strolled through the picturesque orange trees, enjoying the peaceful ambiance. The square was filled with locals and tourists, all enjoying the beautiful morning. It's amazing how a simple square can be a hub of community and connection.

Next on my list was Place El Haouta, a square that truly captures the essence of Chefchaouen. Known for its unique architecture and charming ambiance, Place El Haouta is a must-visit. The name 'Hawta' means surrounded or walled in, which perfectly describes the character of this square. Adorned with blue-tiled buildings featuring classic arches and iron grills, the square creates a delightful and distinctive atmosphere. The beautifully patterned and cobbled floor adds to its allure. I spent some time here, simply soaking in the surroundings and capturing the beauty through my camera lens. It’s a photographer’s dream, with endless opportunities for picturesque moments.

I met up with my friends for lunch at Restaurant Triana. This place came highly recommended, and it did not disappoint. We sat on the terrace, enjoying the stunning views of the blue city while savoring delicious Moroccan cuisine. I opted for the lamb tagine, a flavorful and aromatic dish that was cooked to perfection. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, with live music adding to the ambiance. It was the perfect spot to relax and share stories with friends.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to explore more of the city's hidden gems. We wandered through the narrow, winding streets of the medina, getting lost in the maze of blue-washed buildings. Every corner revealed a new surprise, from colorful shops selling local crafts to hidden courtyards filled with flowers. It felt like stepping back in time, immersing ourselves in the rich history and culture of Chefchaouen.

In the evening, we sought out Bar Oum Rabie, a local spot known for its relaxed atmosphere and affordable drinks. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. We ordered some local beers and tapas, enjoying the company of locals and fellow travelers. The bar had a cozy vibe, with dim lighting and traditional Moroccan decor. It was a great way to experience the local nightlife and connect with the community.

For dinner, we chose Assaada, a restaurant that had been recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant had a charming ambiance, with a rooftop dining area offering stunning views of the city. I decided to try the vegetable couscous, a hearty and flavorful dish that was packed with fresh vegetables and aromatic spices. The service was excellent, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

As I walked back to Riad Zaitouna Chaouen, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's adventures. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Callejón de Sidi Bouchouka, the Sidi Bouchouka photo spot, and Bab El Hammar [if last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I'm excited to see what new adventures await in this enchanting blue city.

The weather today was typical for August in Chefchaouen: hot and sunny, with temperatures reaching the high 80s. The clear skies made the blue hues of the city even more vibrant, creating a stunning visual spectacle. I made sure to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen, as the sun can be quite intense during this time of year.

I am so grateful for this journey and for the chance to share these experiences with my friends. I know Greta and Lila would love it here, and I can't wait to bring them back someday. For now, I'll continue to explore and soak in all that Chefchaouen has to offer, one blue alleyway at a time.
