Exploring the Blue Pearl: A Journey to Chefchaouen with Friends
Day 7: Hiking Through Nature's Canvas: Discovering Talassemtane National Park
Embark on a scenic hike through Talassemtane National Park with Somchai, experiencing Morocco's natural beauty and local flavors.
A Day in the Emerald Embrace of Talassemtane
Today, my friends and I ventured beyond the blue walls of Chefchaouen and into the verdant embrace of Talassemtane National Park. After several days immersed in the town’s captivating colors and bustling markets, a day in nature felt like just what we needed. We anticipated a day filled with scenic trails, local flavors, and the kind of quiet reflection that only nature can inspire.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Hamsa. The rooftop terrace provided a stunning panoramic view of Chefchaouen, allowing us to admire the morning sun casting a golden glow over the blue city. I ordered the falafel plate, while my friends opted for traditional Moroccan pastries and mint tea. With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off towards Talassemtane National Park.

The drive to the park was an adventure in itself. As we ascended into the Rif Mountains, the landscape transformed from the blue hues of Chefchaouen to a tapestry of green and brown. The air grew crisper, carrying the scent of pine and earth. I couldn't help but feel grateful for this escape, a chance to reconnect with nature and leave behind the digital distractions of Berlin.
Upon arriving at Talassemtane, we were immediately struck by the park’s serene beauty. Towering cedar and oak trees formed a canopy overhead, filtering the sunlight into dappled patterns on the forest floor. We chose a trail that promised a moderate hike with rewarding views, making sure to pack plenty of water and snacks for the journey. Comfortable walking shoes, thankfully, were on my list of essentials, though I did momentarily lament forgetting my travel pillow – it would have made the drive even more comfortable.

The trail wound its way through the forest, leading us deeper into the heart of the park. The sounds of nature surrounded us – birdsong, the rustling of leaves, and the gentle murmur of a nearby stream. We paused frequently to take photos, capturing the stunning vistas and the intricate details of the flora and fauna. My friends, always quick to spot interesting wildlife, pointed out a family of Barbary macaques swinging through the trees. It was a truly magical sight, a reminder of the rich biodiversity that this region holds.
Nature's beauty is a gift that enriches the soul and reminds us of the simple joys in life.
As lunchtime approached, we found a picturesque spot by a clear stream to enjoy our meal. We had packed sandwiches, fruits, and, of course, more mint tea. Sharing food and stories amidst such natural beauty created a sense of camaraderie and contentment. It reminded me of picnics back in Lampang, Thailand, with my family, sharing sticky rice and mangoes by the river.
After our refreshing lunch, we continued our hike, eventually reaching a viewpoint that offered panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The vast expanse of the Rif Mountains stretched out before us, a sea of green peaks and valleys. It was a sight that took my breath away, a moment of pure awe and appreciation for the natural world.
The trails in Talassemtane National Park offer varying levels of difficulty, with some leading to waterfalls and others to the summit of Jbel El Kelaa mountain. We opted for a moderate route, enjoying the diverse plant life and the occasional sighting of local wildlife. For those planning a visit, it’s worth noting that some trails can be a bit tricky, and following the blue dots on the rocks is recommended.
As the afternoon wore on, we began our descent, making our way back towards the park entrance. Before leaving, we stopped at a small café near a blue river, where locals were serving fresh mint tea. Sipping the warm, fragrant tea while soaking in the tranquil atmosphere was the perfect way to conclude our visit to Talassemtane National Park.
Back in Chefchaouen, we decided to explore Bazar Sâhara. The shop was filled with an array of colorful textiles, ceramics, and local handicrafts. I picked up a few souvenirs for Greta and Lila, a small tagine and a hand-painted bowl, hoping to bring a piece of Chefchaouen back to our home in Berlin.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Hajji, known as one of the oldest restaurants in Chefchaouen. The restaurant’s traditional Moroccan cuisine was the perfect way to end our day of exploration. I savored a flavorful tagine, while my friends enjoyed couscous and vegetable soup. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly hospitable.
