Farewell, Kampot!

As our Cambodian adventure draws to a close, today was all about embracing the last moments of Kampot's charm. It was a day filled with exploration, delicious food, and creating lasting memories with Hans and Lara. While I'm a little sad to see our trip end, I'm also filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences we've shared.

Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at BaZaar Café & Healing Space. The café had such a laid-back, bohemian vibe that immediately put us at ease. I ordered a Buddha bowl with a mixed fruit shake, and it was amazing. Hans opted for a savory toast breakfast, while Lara enjoyed a green pesto panini. What a cozy and peaceful place to start the day! The taste of the food reminded me of home in France. BaZaar Café is a hidden gem run by a lovely woman who serves wonderful food and sweets. They also sell homemade jars of pastes, cheeses, essential oils, soaps, shampoo, and second-hand clothing. The backyard is a chill garden where you can relax in peace.

Refreshed and ready, we set off to explore Phnom Kbal Romeas, also known as rhinoceros head hill in Khmer. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through the scenic countryside. The caves were inhabited during Neolithic times (5000-3000BC). Upon arrival, we were greeted by a man from Climbodia offering guided tours, but we decided to explore the caves on our own. The brick fragments indicate that the temple was built in the cave, and it is believed to be an important place of spirit worship, which continues to this day.

Sometimes, the most unexpected places hold the most profound connections to our past and offer the most serene moments of reflection.

The caves were a fascinating mix of natural formations and ancient history. Lara was particularly thrilled with the small Buddhist shrine inside the first natural chamber. We climbed a small set of stairs that took us to an even larger space. There were quite a few paths to explore. The cave is not very deep, and some lights shine through from above, so no need for a torch.

Next on our itinerary was CS Farm, a charming spot in the Teuk Chhou District. It was a short tuk-tuk ride from Phnom Kbal Romeas. CS Farm is a hidden gem that invites tourists to immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of the Cambodian countryside. We strolled through the verdant fields, observing the daily operations of the farm. Lara loved seeing all the different plants and learning about how they grow. The serene environment, filled with chirping birds and rustling leaves, was incredibly peaceful. It was a perfect opportunity to connect with nature and appreciate the agricultural heritage of Kampot.

For lunch, we headed to ARY Rang BBQ, eager to try authentic Korean cuisine. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere. We opted for the barbecue experience, grilling our own meats right at the table. It was interactive and fun, and the marinated short ribs were a definite highlight. We also enjoyed the various side dishes, including kimchi and pickled vegetables. ARY Rang BBQ offers an opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture while enjoying a unique culinary adventure.

As the day wound down, we decided to check out Nelly Bar for a relaxing evening drink. It was a cozy spot, perfect for reflecting on our Cambodian adventure. The staff was friendly and hospitable, making us feel right at home. It was a great way to unwind and chat with other travelers from around the world.

Finally, for our last dinner in Kampot, we chose Simons Tandoor Indian Restaurant. As someone who appreciates diverse culinary experiences, I was excited to see what Simons had to offer. The restaurant had a welcoming ambiance, and the aroma of spices filled the air. We started with the Simon's Special Tandoori Platter, which included prawn, fish, chicken, and cottage cheese. For my main course, I selected the Malai Kofta, cottage cheese and potato balls coated with aromatic spices and fresh cream in exotic Indian onion sauce. Lara enjoyed Veg. Uttapam, a popular dish of South India. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey in Kampot.

And so, our 10-day family adventure in Kampot comes to an end. Tomorrow, we embark on our journey back to Dresden, filled with memories of serene riversides, ancient caves, and the warmth of the Cambodian people. This trip has not only been a vacation but a heartfelt reunion with my heritage, which I was so happy to share with Hans and Lara. Although we didn't get to use the rain ponchos or insect repellent from our essentials, we certainly made the most of every moment. Until next time, Kampot!
