Echoes of the Past, Glimmers of Gold

Today was a journey through time, tracing the footsteps of ancient kings and witnessing the enduring beauty of Chiang Mai's spiritual heritage. From the submerged ruins of Wiang Kum Kam to the radiant heights of Wat Phra That Doi Kham, each site offered a unique glimpse into the rich tapestry of Lanna history and culture. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and profound appreciation for the artistry and devotion that have shaped this enchanting region.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at The Service at 1921 House. The restaurant's ambiance was reminiscent of a bygone era, with its elegant décor and attentive service. It felt like stepping back in time to a colonial-era gathering. Lara was especially fascinated by the unique setting, and Hans enjoyed the historical artifacts displayed throughout the restaurant. The food was delicious, providing us with the perfect start to a day filled with exploration. I particularly enjoyed the light salad and prawn cocktail, while Hans savored the exquisite steak. It's always wonderful to find a place that caters to both our tastes.

With our appetites sated, we set off to explore Wiang Kum Kam, the ancient city that predates Chiang Mai. As we drove, I shared with Lara the story of King Mangrai, who established Wiang Kum Kam as his capital in the late 13th century, only to abandon it due to repeated flooding. The city remained lost to history for centuries, buried beneath layers of mud and silt, until its rediscovery in the 1980s.

Arriving at Wiang Kum Kam, it felt like stepping into a different world. The ruins, scattered across a wide expanse of land, whispered tales of a once-thriving city. We decided to explore the site by horse-drawn carriage, a charming way to soak in the atmosphere and learn about the history from our knowledgeable guide. The January sun was gentle, casting long shadows across the ancient stones as we made our way through the site.

Our first stop was Wat Chedi Liam, a temple that miraculously escaped the floods that plagued Wiang Kum Kam. Its Haripunchai-style chedi, built in the late 13th century, stood tall and proud, a testament to the architectural prowess of the era. I imagined the city in its prime, a bustling hub of trade and culture, with this temple at its heart. Lara was captivated by the intricate carvings on the chedi, while Hans appreciated the temple's serene atmosphere.

As we continued our tour, we visited Wat Nan Chang, a ruined temple that provided stark evidence of the ancient flooding. Excavations revealed that the temple had been submerged under nearly two meters of sediment, a sobering reminder of the forces of nature that led to Wiang Kum Kam's abandonment. It was a poignant moment, contemplating the lives of those who once called this city home, and the challenges they faced.

Exploring the ruins of Wiang Kum Kam felt like piecing together fragments of a forgotten dream, each stone whispering stories of a bygone era.

After immersing ourselves in the history of Wiang Kum Kam, we drove back towards Chiang Mai, our next destination being Wat Chedi Luang, a temple of immense significance in the heart of the old city. As we approached the temple, the sheer scale of the chedi was awe-inspiring. Built in the 14th century, it once housed the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most sacred relic, and stood as the tallest structure in the Lanna kingdom.

The earthquake of 1545 caused significant damage to the chedi, but even in its partially ruined state, it exuded a sense of grandeur and resilience. We walked around the base of the chedi, marveling at the intricate carvings of elephants that adorned its walls. I shared with Lara the story of King Saen Muang Ma, who initiated the construction of the chedi to house his father's ashes, and the subsequent kings who contributed to its completion.

Within the temple grounds, we also visited the city pillar, Sao Inthakin, a sacred monument believed to protect Chiang Mai and grant fertility to its people. Hans was particularly interested in the history of the city pillar, and we spent some time discussing its significance in Lanna culture. Unfortunately, women aren't allowed to enter the building itself, which I found a bit disappointing, but I respected the tradition.

For lunch, we ventured to The Swan Burmese Cuisine, a hidden gem recommended by a local friend. The restaurant offered a delightful array of authentic Burmese dishes, a welcome change from the familiar Thai fare. I was eager to introduce Lara to the diverse flavors of Southeast Asia, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. We savored the Mohinga, a flavorful fish soup, and the Tea Leaf Salad, a unique and refreshing dish. The staff was incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a truly memorable culinary experience.

Our final stop of the day was Wat Phra That Doi Kham, a temple perched atop a hill overlooking Chiang Mai. As we drove up the winding road, the panoramic views of the city and the surrounding countryside were breathtaking. The temple is also known as the Temple of the Golden Mountain.

Wat Phra That Doi Kham is known for its enormous seated Buddha statue, a gleaming white and gold figure that can be seen from miles away. We climbed the Naga staircase, flanked by intricately carved serpent deities, to reach the temple grounds. The air was filled with the scent of incense and the sounds of chanting, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. I felt a sense of peace wash over me as we approached the Buddha statue, a symbol of enlightenment and compassion.

We also visited the golden chedi, which enshrines a relic of the Buddha, and offered jasmine garlands as a sign of respect. I shared with Lara the legends surrounding Wat Phra That Doi Kham, including the story of the two cannibal giants who repented and vowed to protect the temple. She was enthralled by the tales, and I was happy to see her engaging with the local culture in such a meaningful way.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape, we made our way back down the hill, our hearts full of gratitude for the experiences of the day. For dinner, we chose The House Kitchen, a local favorite known for its authentic Thai dishes. After a day of exploring ancient ruins and golden temples, a comforting and familiar meal was exactly what we needed. We enjoyed classic dishes like Pad Thai and Green Curry, savoring the flavors of Northern Thailand. The staff was warm and welcoming, making us feel right at home.

Before heading back to the Loyy Hotel - Hostel, we stopped by Rojana Art & Souvenirs. I wanted to find a special memento to remember our day of exploration. The shop was filled with a variety of handmade crafts, from woven textiles to wood carvings. I finally settled on a small, intricately carved wooden elephant, a symbol of strength and good luck. Lara chose a colorful woven bracelet, a reminder of our adventures in Chiang Mai.
