A Day Among Chiang Mai's Highlands
Today was a day of exploring the natural and cultural highlands of Chiang Mai. Leaving the bustle of the city behind, my family and I ventured into the lush landscapes that surround this vibrant city. It was a day filled with the soothing sounds of cascading water, the vibrant colors of exotic flora, and the rich traditions of the local hill tribes.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Madame Koh Fun Dining. The restaurant’s modern and stylish ambiance was a delightful way to start the day. I enjoyed a flavorful bowl of Khao Soi, a northern Thai specialty, while Hans opted for the duck confit, and Lara enjoyed some fried rice. It was a satisfying meal that energized us for the adventures ahead. The friendly staff and the cozy atmosphere made it a memorable start to our day. I even managed to scribble down a few notes on the intriguing history of the Khmer empire, inspired by the restaurant’s fusion of cultures.
After breakfast, we set off for Mae Sa Waterfall. The drive itself was scenic, winding through rolling hills and verdant forests. As we approached the waterfall, the air grew cooler, and the sound of rushing water filled the air. The waterfall is a series of ten cascades, each with its own unique charm. We decided to explore as many levels as we could, following the well-maintained trails that meandered alongside the stream. The lush greenery and the refreshing spray of the water created a serene and invigorating atmosphere.

Lara was particularly excited to dip her toes in the cool water, while Hans, ever the photographer, captured the stunning beauty of the falls. I enjoyed the peacefulness of the surroundings, taking in the sights and sounds of nature. We spent a couple of hours exploring the different levels, each offering a different perspective and a unique experience. It was a refreshing escape from the city, a chance to reconnect with nature and appreciate the simple beauty of the natural world. Despite the popularity of the falls, we found moments of solitude, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the tranquil surroundings.
Nature's beauty is a gift that enriches our lives and reminds us of the interconnectedness of all things.
Next on our itinerary was the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden. As a librarian with a passion for Southeast Asian history and culture, I was particularly excited to explore this botanical paradise. The garden is vast, spanning over 1,000 hectares, and is home to an incredible array of plant species. We decided to take the tram to get an overview of the garden before exploring it on foot.

The first stop was the Canopy Walkway, a steel-and-glass path that winds through the treetops of the forest. It was an exhilarating experience, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and the lush greenery below. Lara was a bit nervous at first, but she soon overcame her fear and enjoyed the walk, pointing out the various birds and insects that we spotted along the way. The gardens were established in 1992 and named to honor Queen Sirikit. The variety of flora was staggering, and I was impressed by the well-maintained trails and exhibits.
After the Canopy Walkway, we explored the various glasshouses, each showcasing a different type of plant life. The Arid House was particularly fascinating, with its collection of desert-dwelling cacti and succulents. The Rainforest House was equally impressive, with its lush tropical vegetation and cascading waterfalls. I was particularly intrigued by the Glasshouse for Medicinal Plants of Indigenous Tribes, which provided insights into the traditional uses of plants by the local hill tribes. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn about the rich biodiversity of the region and the importance of preserving it for future generations. I was reminded of the importance of preserving cultural knowledge, much like the books I safeguard in my library.
As the afternoon progressed, we made our way to Hmong Doi Pui Village. This village offered a fascinating glimpse into the lives and traditions of the Hmong people, one of the six principal hill tribes of Thailand. The village is located on the peak of Doi Suthep and is a blend of traditional and modern influences. We explored the village, admiring the colorful hand-sewn clothing and handicrafts on display. Lara was particularly drawn to the intricate designs and the vibrant colors, while Hans was interested in the history and culture of the Hmong people.

We visited the Hmong museum, which provided valuable information about the Hmong culture and customs. I learned that the Hmong migrated to Thailand from China in the 18th century and have since established a unique identity and way of life. I was also fascinated to learn about their traditional farming practices, their religious beliefs, and their social structures. The village was a vibrant hub of activity, with locals selling their wares, children playing in the streets, and the aroma of local coffee filling the air. We sampled some of the local coffee at an outdoor café, enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding gardens and hills. It was a moment of cultural immersion, a chance to connect with a community that has maintained its traditions despite the pressures of modernization.
For lunch, we stopped by Tikky Cafe. The cozy atmosphere and the diverse menu made it a great choice for a family meal. I enjoyed a flavorful Thai curry, while Hans opted for a Western dish, and Lara enjoyed a smoothie bowl. The prices were reasonable, and the service was friendly and efficient. It was a pleasant break in the middle of our busy day. I noted the cafe’s popularity among Westerners, reflecting Chiang Mai’s appeal as a multicultural hub.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind at Zoe in Yellow. It was a lively and vibrant bar, popular with both locals and tourists. We enjoyed some refreshing cocktails and listened to the music, soaking in the energetic atmosphere. Lara enjoyed watching the people dancing and mingling, while Hans and I enjoyed the opportunity to relax and reflect on the day’s adventures. The bar was divided into two zones, a garden area and an indoor pub, offering a variety of experiences. It was a fun and festive way to end our day, a chance to celebrate the memories we had created and the experiences we had shared.

For dinner, we chose B Samcook Home16, a restaurant known for its modern twist on traditional Thai food. The restaurant was nestled in a quiet side street, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The entrance was inviting, with a lush outdoor area and a charming, quirky interior. We opted for the seven-course meal, which was a culinary journey through the flavors of northern Thailand. Each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chef, Boy, was incredibly humble and passionate about his craft. He even came out to chat with us, sharing his inspiration and his love for cooking. It was a truly memorable dining experience, a testament to the creativity and innovation of Chiang Mai’s culinary scene.
