Saying Goodbye to Shirakawa-go

Today marks the end of our enchanting journey in Shirakawa-go. As I sit down to write, a sense of peaceful contentment washes over me, mixed with a tinge of sadness that our time in this magical village is coming to an end. These past nine days have been nothing short of extraordinary, filled with cultural immersion, scenic beauty, and heartwarming encounters.

Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Soba dojo Restaurant. Liam and I were eager to experience their highly-praised soba noodles one last time. The restaurant's spacious and clean setting provided a tranquil start to our day. I opted for the cold Zaru Soba, while Liam chose the Tanuki Soba. The noodles had an excellent texture, and the friendly atmosphere made our morning even more enjoyable. It was a self-service setup, but the staff was incredibly attentive and kind, making us feel right at home.

After breakfast, we ventured to the Hida Earth Wisdom Center. Nestled within this center was the Museum Hida, which promised an insightful look into the region's craftsmanship. As a graphic designer with a love for cultural anthropology, I was particularly excited about this visit. The museum did not disappoint. It showcased living and culture ware, focusing on furniture making in the Hida Takayama Region. The history of Hida's craftsmanship dates back to the Asuka period, when artisans constructed palaces and Buddhist temples as a form of tax payment. It was fascinating to see how the culture and techniques of woodwork from Hida's craftsmen have been inherited and are still evident in modern architecture and street festival stalls.

To truly appreciate a culture, one must immerse themselves in its history, traditions, and the artistry that shapes its identity.

The museum also featured a display of modern furniture, including nearly 100 award-winning signature chairs. What was unique was that visitors were invited to sit, touch, and experience the comfort of these chairs. Liam, ever the pragmatist, took full advantage of this, testing out each chair with a critical eye. I, on the other hand, admired the design and craftsmanship, marveling at how form and function could come together so beautifully.

For lunch, we decided to try Masuzono Bunsuke, a small family restaurant known for its fresh fish dishes. It was a short, pleasant walk from the main town, offering a serene escape from the bustling crowds. The chef takes pride in serving fresh fish, personally catching them from the pond right after receiving an order. Liam, with his Irish love for seafood, was in his element. We opted for the Masuen Set Meal, which included grilled salted char, rainbow trout cooked in sweet sauce and as sashimi, and fried masu trout. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the sashimi had a unique flavor that was both delicate and satisfying. The setting was peaceful, and the service was warm and welcoming, making it a memorable culinary experience. I was really taken by the fact that the fish was so fresh, and raised in clean spring water, as a result it didn't have the strong smell that river fish usually have.

In the afternoon, we dedicated some time to shopping at Ichihi. This charming souvenir store offered a delightful array of local crafts and delicacies, perfect for capturing the essence of our trip. I picked up some beautifully crafted Washi paper, reminiscent of the traditional arts I admire back in Kelowna. Liam found a unique sake set, a nod to his enjoyment of local spirits. It was a lovely way to support the local artisans and take home a piece of Shirakawa-go with us.

As the day drew to a close, we had our final dinner at Tanaka-ya. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and we were eager to try their local specialties. I ordered the Hoba Miso Udon, while Liam went for the Hida Beef Donburi. The Hoba Miso had a rich, umami flavor that was incredibly comforting, and Liam raved about the tenderness and flavor of the Hida beef. It was the perfect way to end our culinary journey in Shirakawa-go.

Reflecting on our time here, I am struck by the incredible sense of community and the dedication to preserving their cultural heritage. The gassho-zukuri farmhouses, with their steep thatched roofs, are not just architectural marvels but symbols of resilience and harmony with nature. It’s inspiring to see how the people of Shirakawa-go have managed to balance tradition with modernity, creating a sustainable way of life that honors their past while embracing the future.

Liam and I often talk about sustainable living and cultural preservation, values deeply ingrained in our travels. Shirakawa-go has reinforced our commitment to these principles, showing us that it is possible to live in harmony with nature and preserve cultural heritage for future generations. I'm really glad we didn't forget our reusable water bottles, it's a small thing, but it makes a difference when you are trying to be sustainable.

As we prepare to leave tomorrow, heading back to Tokyo before our flight home to Kelowna, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this experience. Shirakawa-go has touched our hearts in ways we couldn't have imagined. We've learned, explored, and connected with a culture that is both ancient and vibrant. This trip has not only been a visual feast but a journey of the soul.

Tomorrow, we will begin our journey back home, cherishing the memories we've made in this enchanting village. While our adventure in Shirakawa-go is coming to an end, the lessons and experiences will stay with us forever. I am already looking forward to sharing more stories and insights from our travels, hoping to inspire others to embark on their own journeys of discovery.

Thank you, Shirakawa-go, for your beauty, your history, and your warmth. Until next time, safe travels and happy explorations!

P.S. I'm already dreaming of our next adventure, Liam! Maybe Ireland? 😉
