A Day of Discovery
Today, Liam and I embarked on a journey through time and nature, immersing ourselves in the rich cultural tapestry and serene landscapes of Takayama. It was a day filled with the charm of old farmhouses, the tranquility of lush forests, and the delightful flavors of local cuisine. Each moment was a step deeper into the heart of Japan's Hida region, leaving us with cherished memories and a profound appreciation for its heritage.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Arai. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, while Liam, ever the adventurous one, chose the local udon. Sipping my miso soup, I couldn't help but feel grateful for these quiet moments together, away from the hustle of our everyday lives back in Kelowna. It's these simple pleasures, like a warm meal in a charming setting, that make our travels so special. Remembering those forgotten travel essentials, I made a mental note to buy a power adapter; my phone was already flashing the low battery sign!
Fueled up and ready, we set off to explore the Hida no Sato Open Air Museum. As we stepped through the entrance, it felt like we were transported back to the Edo period. The museum is home to over 30 traditional houses from the Hida region, each carefully preserved and open for exploration. The gassho-zukuri farmhouses, with their steep thatched roofs resembling hands joined in prayer, were particularly captivating. Liam was fascinated by the intricate wooden architecture, while I couldn't resist peeking into every nook and cranny, imagining what life must have been like for the families who once lived there.

Wandering through the village-like atmosphere, we marveled at the former village head's house, the logging huts, and the storehouses. Each building had its own unique charm and character, showcasing the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the past. The indoor fireplaces were lit, filling the air with a comforting smoky scent, adding to the authenticity of the experience. I couldn't help but think how much my mom would have loved this place, with her passion for history and traditional crafts.
The beauty of Hida no Sato lies not just in its well-preserved buildings, but in its ability to transport you to a different era, allowing you to experience the simplicity and charm of rural Japanese life.
After immersing ourselves in the cultural heritage of Hida no Sato, we decided to embrace nature at the nearby Nature Forest. The forest trails offered a refreshing escape from the summer heat, with the canopy providing a cool and shady respite. As we hiked deeper into the forest, we were surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sounds of nature. Liam, ever the outdoorsman, was in his element, pointing out different species of trees and plants. I, on the other hand, was more focused on capturing the perfect shot with my camera, determined to capture the essence of this serene landscape.

The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Sunlight filtered through the leaves, creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadow. We stumbled upon a small clearing with a bench, where we paused to catch our breath and soak in the tranquility. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the simple joys in life. I even managed to get a few yoga poses in, feeling completely at peace amidst the towering trees.
By lunchtime, our appetites were calling, so we headed to Soba Dojo Restaurant. As a graphic designer, I couldn't help but appreciate the minimalist decor and the artful presentation of the dishes. We both ordered the restaurant's signature soba noodle dish, made with locally sourced buckwheat flour. The noodles were perfectly cooked, with a delicate flavor that was enhanced by the savory broth and the fresh toppings. Liam, being the meat-lover he is, added some tempura, while I opted for the vegetarian version with mountain vegetables. It was a truly satisfying meal that left us feeling energized and ready for more adventures.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to Hiiragi for dinner. The restaurant exuded a cozy and inviting ambiance, with its warm lighting and traditional decor. We decided to try the Hida beef, a local specialty that is renowned for its melt-in-your-mouth tenderness. Each bite was an explosion of flavor, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef. We savored every moment, knowing that this was a culinary experience we wouldn't soon forget.

To cap off our day, we ventured to Hidaji, a local bar known for its extensive selection of sake. Though not a big drinker myself, I couldn't resist trying a small glass of the local brew. Liam, of course, was in his element, sampling different varieties and engaging in conversation with the friendly bartender. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, a perfect way to end our day of exploration.

As we walked back to our guesthouse, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today had been a perfect blend of culture, nature, and culinary delights, a testament to the charm and beauty of Takayama. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, where we plan to visit the Jinya-mae Morning Markets and the Yoshijima Traditional House. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us as we continue our journey through this enchanting region of Japan. I know that tomorrow will bring more unique experiences, and I can't wait to share them with you all.
I'm especially excited to visit the Jinya-mae Morning Markets. I've heard so much about the local crafts and produce, and I can't wait to immerse myself in the vibrant atmosphere. Liam is eager to try some of the local street food, while I'm hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring back home to Kelowna. The Yoshijima Traditional House is another must-see attraction on our list. This beautifully preserved merchant house offers a glimpse into the lives of the wealthy families who once called Takayama home. I'm particularly interested in the architecture and the intricate details of the interior design. I'm sure it will be a feast for the eyes and a source of inspiration for my own design work. I'm also looking forward to trying some new restaurants tomorrow. I've heard great things about Yukinko, where we plan to have breakfast, and Gassho, where we'll be having lunch. And for dinner, we're planning to indulge in some more Hida beef at Morizen. It's safe to say that our culinary journey through Takayama is far from over. Of course, no trip to Takayama would be complete without a visit to Kataribe, a local shop known for its traditional crafts and souvenirs. I'm hoping to find some unique pieces to add to my collection, as well as some gifts for family and friends back home. I'm sure Liam will find something to catch his eye as well, perhaps a handcrafted knife or a piece of local pottery. As we drift off to sleep tonight, I can't help but feel grateful for this incredible journey. Takayama has exceeded all of my expectations, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store for us. Stay tuned for more updates from our adventures in Japan!
