Exploring the Timeless Beauty of Shirakawa-go
Day 7: A Day of Traditions: Exploring Takayama's Soul
Immerse yourself in Takayama's rich heritage: bustling morning markets, historic houses, and culinary delights await in this charming town.
Takayama's Timeless Charm
Takayama, with its beautifully preserved old town, offered us a glimpse into Japan's rich cultural tapestry. Today was all about immersing ourselves in local traditions, from the lively morning markets to the meticulously crafted architecture of a bygone era. It was a day of simple pleasures and profound beauty.
Our day began bright and early at the Jinya-mae Morning Markets. The crisp mountain air, combined with the vibrant energy of the vendors, was invigorating. Liam, ever the early riser, was particularly thrilled. He loves the hustle and bustle of markets, a trait he probably picked up during his childhood visits to the farmers' markets back in Ireland. The market was a riot of colors and aromas, with local farmers proudly displaying their fresh produce, pickles, and handmade crafts. We sampled some of the local delicacies, including *mitsuboshi daikon*, a type of radish that was both sweet and peppery. I couldn't resist buying a small woven basket, perfect for carrying my sketching supplies. Liam, on the other hand, found a unique hand-carved wooden toy for his nephew back home. We chatted with a few vendors, learning about their families and the history of their crafts. It’s these small interactions that make traveling so rewarding.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments, like a shared smile with a local vendor or the taste of a freshly picked radish.
After the market, we strolled through the old town, admiring the traditional wooden houses with their overhanging eaves and intricate latticework. The town was remarkably well-preserved, and it felt like stepping back in time. The gentle murmur of the Miyagawa River added to the serene atmosphere. We paused to watch a group of local women washing vegetables in the river, their laughter echoing through the streets. It was a scene that could have been painted centuries ago.
For breakfast, we stopped at Yukinko, a charming little cafe recommended by a local we met at the market. The cafe was cozy and inviting, with wooden beams and soft lighting. We ordered *hoba miso*, a local specialty consisting of miso grilled on a magnolia leaf. The smoky aroma and savory flavor were the perfect way to start our day. Liam, who is always up for trying new foods, declared it one of the best breakfasts he’s had on our trip so far. I enjoyed a cup of matcha latte, savoring the subtle bitterness and creamy texture.

Our next stop was the Yoshijima Heritage House, a beautifully preserved merchant house that offered a glimpse into the lives of Takayama's wealthy merchants during the Edo period. The house was a masterpiece of traditional Japanese architecture, with its intricate woodwork, tatami mats, and serene garden. We wandered through the various rooms, admiring the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail. The house was designed to maximize natural light and ventilation, creating a comfortable and harmonious living space. I was particularly impressed by the *kura*, or storehouse, which was built with thick clay walls to protect against fire and theft. Liam, with his keen interest in engineering, was fascinated by the structural design of the house, noting the ingenious use of interlocking beams and joints.

For lunch, we chose Gassho, a restaurant specializing in local Hida beef. The restaurant had a traditional Japanese ambiance, with private tatami rooms and views of a tranquil garden. We ordered a Hida beef set menu, which included grilled Hida beef, miso soup, rice, and pickled vegetables. The Hida beef was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in our mouths with each bite. Liam, a self-proclaimed carnivore, was in heaven. He savored every morsel, declaring it the best beef he’s ever tasted. I, on the other hand, enjoyed the delicate flavors of the miso soup and pickled vegetables, which provided a refreshing contrast to the richness of the beef.

In the afternoon, we indulged in a bit of shopping at Kataribe, a local craft shop that showcased the work of Takayama's artisans. The shop was filled with beautiful handmade items, including pottery, lacquerware, and textiles. I was particularly drawn to the *sarubobo* dolls, small faceless dolls that are considered a symbol of good luck in the Hida region. I bought a few as souvenirs for friends and family back home. Liam found a beautiful hand-painted sake set for his brother, who is a sake connoisseur. The shop owner was a friendly and knowledgeable woman who shared stories about the history and significance of each item. It was a pleasure to support local artisans and learn about their craft.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Morizen for dinner, a restaurant known for its traditional Kaiseki cuisine. Kaiseki is a multi-course Japanese dinner that showcases the season's freshest ingredients. The meal was a culinary masterpiece, with each dish carefully prepared and beautifully presented. We savored the delicate flavors and textures, appreciating the artistry and skill of the chef. Liam, who is usually a straightforward eater, was surprisingly open to trying new things. He even enjoyed the *uni* (sea urchin), which I had been hesitant to order. The meal was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a celebration of Takayama's rich culinary heritage.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Jin Homura Art Museum and Nezumita-mon Gate. I am excited to delve deeper into the art and history of this fascinating region. I am also looking forward to trying the local delicacies at Kita no Sho for breakfast, Hakusuien for lunch and Tenshukaku for dinner, as well as unwinding at Shiraogi bar in the evening. It's amazing how quickly you can fall in love with a place. Takayama has captured our hearts with its timeless charm and warm hospitality. As we prepare to leave, we know that we will carry the memories of this special place with us forever. I'm also reminded of my forgotten power adapter, definitely adding that to the list for future trips!
It's been a wonderful journey so far, and I can't wait to see what adventures await us in the days to come. I feel so grateful to be sharing these experiences with Liam, whose unwavering curiosity and enthusiasm make every day an adventure. Tonight, as I reflect on our day in Takayama, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. This journey has been a reminder of the beauty and diversity of our world, and the importance of connecting with different cultures and communities.
