Solo Retreat to Yakushima: A Journey into Japan's Natural Wonder
Day 5: Island Lights and Culinary Delights: Discovering Yakushima's Hidden Gems
Explore Yakushima's serene beauty with a visit to the iconic lighthouse, local art, and savoring authentic Japanese cuisine.
Beacon of Light, Flavors of the Island
Today was a day of simple pleasures and quiet discoveries here on Yakushima. I set out to explore a bit more of the island's coastline and sample some of the local flavors, and I must say, it was a delightful experience that truly captured the essence of this tranquil paradise.
My morning started with a hearty breakfast at Matsutake in Kurio. This charming, family-run noodle restaurant is tucked away in a traditional Japanese building, and it felt like stepping back in time. I opted for their famous soba noodles with tempura. The noodles were perfectly thin and flavorful, and the tempura was light and crispy. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. The kind owners and the authentic atmosphere made it even more special. It reminded me of the cozy restaurants Hans and I used to visit in small Ukrainian villages, where the food was always made with love and care.

After breakfast, I made my way to the Yakushima National Park, eager to immerse myself in the island's natural beauty. Though I didn't embark on a long hike today, I spent some time wandering through the park's trails, admiring the lush greenery and the ancient cedar trees. The air was fresh and clean, and the sounds of nature filled my ears. It's amazing how peaceful and rejuvenating it can be to simply be surrounded by nature. I even spotted some bluish-purple flowers of Yakushima rindo among the rocks.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.
Next on my itinerary was the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. Located on the western tip of the island, this lighthouse has been guiding ships safely since 1897. Although the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, the views from the surrounding area are simply breathtaking. I could see the coastline stretching out in both directions, and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight. I spent some time simply sitting on a nearby bench, soaking in the scenery and reflecting on the journey so far. The lighthouse, with its striking white tower against the blue sea, was a perfect spot for photography.

For lunch, I decided to try Kamogawa Restaurant in Anbo. This local eatery is known for its traditional Japanese dishes and fresh seafood. I opted for the flying fish set meal, a Yakushima specialty. The fish was grilled to perfection and served with a variety of side dishes, including rice, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was a delicious and authentic taste of Yakushima cuisine. I even tried Kamenote (Japanese goose barnacle) for the first time. It had a slightly shrimp-like taste, which was surprisingly good. The restaurant was bustling with locals, which is always a good sign, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. It reminded me of the lively atmosphere of the local markets back in Khmelnytskyi, where you could always find the freshest ingredients and the friendliest faces.

In the afternoon, I ventured to Gallery KIANU, a local shop and gallery that showcases art and crafts from Yakushima. I was immediately drawn to the unique and creative pieces on display. From pottery to woodwork to textiles, there was something for everyone. I ended up purchasing a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl as a souvenir. It will be a lovely reminder of my time on this beautiful island. The gallery also had a selection of original products and art pieces that reflect the island's unique character. It’s wonderful to see local artists drawing inspiration from their surroundings. I also learned they sell a Yakushima-todai Lighthouse T-shirt.

As evening approached, I made my way to a heavenly kitchen for dinner. This unique restaurant is a hidden gem, offering a completely vegan menu that highlights the local produce of Yakushima. The restaurant only serves one group per night, and reservations are essential. I was greeted warmly by the chef, who explained the menu and the inspiration behind each dish. The meal was a culinary journey, with each course showcasing the flavors and textures of Yakushima's vegetables. It was a truly unique and memorable dining experience. The chef even incorporated some Yakushima honey into one of the dishes.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Ohko Waterfall and the Botanic Gardens. I am also hoping to find some time to relax and reflect on my experiences so far. This solo retreat has been exactly what I needed, and I am grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with nature and myself. I might also stop by Hitomekuri bar for a drink.
Before I turn in for the night, I wanted to share a quote that resonated with me today:
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
This quote perfectly captures the spirit of Yakushima, where the most rewarding experiences often require a bit of effort and perseverance. But the beauty and tranquility that await are well worth the journey.
Until tomorrow,
Tetiana
P.S. I almost forgot! I was so busy admiring the scenery today that I completely forgot to look for a Japanese phrasebook. I will definitely make sure to pick one up tomorrow. And I need to remember to buy an extra memory card for my camera, as I am quickly running out of space for all the photos I am taking! Good thing I have my travel journal to write in every night!
