Solo Retreat to Yakushima: A Journey into Japan's Natural Wonder
Day 4: Chasing Waterfalls and Island Flavors: A Day of Discovery in Yakushima
Exploring Yakushima's majestic waterfalls and savoring local cuisine, a day of natural beauty and culinary delights on this enchanting island.
Whispers of Water and Tastes of the Island
Today was a symphony of nature's grandeur and the subtle notes of Yakushima's local flavors. It’s days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo journey – to lose myself in the beauty of the world and find a deeper connection with myself. The island continues to surprise and delight me at every turn, offering both breathtaking vistas and quiet moments of reflection.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Aqua Cafe. The reviews I had read online raved about their Omurice, and I must say, it lived up to the hype. The fluffy eggs, combined with the savory rice and a hint of local spices, were the perfect start to a day of exploration. Paired with a strong cup of Japanese coffee, I felt ready to embrace whatever adventures Yakushima had in store for me. The cafe itself had a warm, inviting atmosphere, reminiscent of a cozy home, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. It reminded me of the small cafes Hans and I used to frequent in Leipzig, a comforting thought so far from home.

With renewed energy, I set off to visit Senpiro Falls. The drive itself was stunning, winding through lush greenery with glimpses of the coastline. As I approached the falls, I could hear the distant roar of the water, a promise of the spectacle to come. The weather in Yakushima in September is warm, with average highs around 28°C, but with a high chance of rain. Fortunately, the skies were clear as I parked the car and made the short walk to the viewing area.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
What greeted me was nothing short of magnificent. Senpiro Falls cascaded down a jagged valley, a 60-meter drop of pure, unadulterated power. The smooth granite rock face, carved over millennia by the relentless flow of water, added to the dramatic effect. I spent a good while simply standing there, mesmerized by the sheer force and beauty of the falls. The mist rising from the bottom created a cool, refreshing breeze, a welcome respite from the humidity.

I learned that the walkway to get closer to the falls was closed due to a landslide, which was a bit disappointing. However, there were two viewing platforms nearby that offered panoramic views of the sea. I took the opportunity to capture a few photos, trying to encapsulate the grandeur of the scene, though no image could truly do it justice. I also visited a small shop near the parking lot, where I picked up a few local souvenirs, including a handcrafted wooden ornament. It's always nice to bring back a little piece of the places I visit, a tangible reminder of the experiences I've had.
Next on my list was Ryujin Falls. I drove along the main road, enjoying the scenic route, and soon arrived at the entrance to the falls. The name 'Ryujin' translates to 'Dragon God', adding a mythical aura to the site. The hike to the falls was relatively easy, suitable for all fitness levels, which I appreciated after yesterday's more strenuous climb. The surrounding forest was lush and vibrant, a testament to Yakushima's rich biodiversity. I could hear the gentle sound of the water as I approached, a soothing melody that beckoned me closer.

Ryujin Falls was a different experience from Senpiro, more intimate and serene. The waterfall was smaller, about 30 meters tall, but it possessed a unique charm. The water cascaded down the rocks into a clear pool, surrounded by verdant foliage. The sun peeked through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the water, creating a magical atmosphere. I spent some time simply sitting by the pool, listening to the sounds of nature, feeling a sense of peace wash over me. It was a moment of quiet contemplation, a chance to reconnect with myself and appreciate the simple beauty of the world around me.
After immersing myself in the tranquility of Ryujin Falls, my stomach started to rumble, reminding me it was time for lunch. I headed to Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan, a local market and restaurant. This was an excellent choice. It offered a variety of local dishes, providing a true taste of Yakushima. I opted for a set meal featuring fresh seafood, locally grown vegetables, and rice. The flavors were exquisite, each ingredient bursting with freshness and authenticity. It was a far cry from the processed foods I sometimes rely on back in Leipzig, a reminder of the importance of wholesome, natural ingredients.

The market itself was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike browsing the various stalls. I enjoyed wandering around, admiring the local produce, crafts, and souvenirs. I even picked up a few local snacks to take back to my guesthouse, a little something to enjoy later in the evening. It's always fascinating to see the local products, to get a sense of the culture and traditions of a place through its food and crafts.
As the afternoon drew to a close, I decided to visit Ganta, a local bar in Miyanoura. I wanted to experience Yakushima's nightlife, to mingle with the locals and get a feel for the island's social scene. Ganta was a cozy, unassuming place, with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. I ordered a local beer and struck up a conversation with a few locals, learning about their lives, their traditions, and their perspectives on the island. They were incredibly welcoming and eager to share their stories, making me feel like a part of their community.

Sometimes, the most meaningful connections are forged in the most unexpected places.
The conversation flowed easily, fueled by good beer and genuine curiosity. I learned about the challenges of living on a remote island, the importance of community, and the deep respect the locals have for nature. It was a humbling experience, a reminder that there is so much to learn from others, regardless of their background or where they come from.
For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at Yakushima Gallery Restaurant. The restaurant was known for its local dishes and artistic ambiance. The restaurant lived up to its reputation. The food was delicious, a fusion of traditional Japanese cuisine and local Yakushima flavors. I savored every bite, appreciating the artistry and skill that went into each dish. The gallery featured works by local artists, adding to the overall cultural experience. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with natural beauty and cultural immersion.

As I walked back to my guesthouse, the stars twinkled above me, a celestial display of unparalleled beauty. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the scent of the ocean and the forest. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences I had today, for the beauty I had witnessed, and for the connections I had made. Yakushima was truly a magical place, a sanctuary for the soul, and I was grateful for the opportunity to explore its wonders.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Yakushima National Park and visit the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Gallery KIANU. Each day brings new adventures, and I'm eager to see what tomorrow holds. Goodnight from Yakushima!
