Discover the historical Citadelle Dades and the unique Kefroun (Turtle's Back) in Morocco's Dades Valley. A day of cultural immersion!
Echoes of the Past, Visions of the Valley
Today's journey through the Dades Valley was a step back in time, interwoven with the stark beauty of the Moroccan landscape. It's fascinating how each day here presents a new facet of this region, further enriching my understanding of its history and culture. As an urban beekeeper, I often think about the intricate structures that support a hive; today, I saw echoes of that in the human structures built to navigate and thrive in this rugged terrain.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant Des Amis. Fuelled up with local flavors, I set out to explore the Citadelle Dades, an ancient fortress that has stood guard over the valley for centuries.

Citadelle Dades: A Sentinel of Stone
The Citadelle Dades isn't just a historical monument; it's a living testament to the strategic importance of the Dades Valley throughout history. Built in the 16th century, the fortress served as a major tower to control access to the Berber village of Ait Ibrirne. As I wandered through its ancient stones, I imagined the countless stories it could tell of Berber tribes, bustling trade caravans, and the ebb and flow of empires. The structure itself is a marvel, built with traditional techniques that have allowed it to withstand the test of time. The ceilings, crafted from reeds atop palm, poplar, or tamarisk trunks, showcase the ingenuity of Berber architecture.
From its vantage point, the views of the Dades Valley were simply breathtaking. The valley unfolded beneath me, a tapestry of green oases and rugged cliffs, all shaped by the Dades River over millennia. It was easy to understand why this location was chosen as a strategic stronghold, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The Citadelle Gorges also acts as a gateway to the Sahara Desert and the four valleys of roses, birds, Todgha, and Dades.
The beauty of the Dades Valley lies not only in its landscapes but also in the stories etched into its ancient stones.
After soaking in the history and the views, I made my way to Kasbah Amlal for lunch. The kasbah itself is located in a beautiful area with lots of greenery. The building is an enchanting complex with beautifully decorated spacious rooms and hallways located within an oasis full of olive trees. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Karim welcomed me and gave a wonderful tour of Kasbah Amlal.

Kefroun (Turtle's Back): Nature's Sculpture
With a full stomach and a renewed sense of adventure, I set off to find Kefroun, or the Turtle's Back, a unique rock formation near the town of Taadadate. The drive itself was an experience, winding through the rugged terrain of the Dades Valley.

As I approached Kefroun, the landscape opened up to reveal this incredible geological formation. It truly does resemble a giant turtle's shell, a testament to the power of natural processes shaping the earth over millions of years. I spent a good hour simply wandering around, taking in the panoramic views and marveling at the intricate patterns etched into the rock.
The area around Kefroun is also ideal for hiking, and I took advantage of the opportunity to explore the surrounding trails. The trails wind through diverse flora and fauna, showcasing the ecological variety of the region.
Before heading back, I made a stop at BELLE VUE DADES, a local shop known for its stunning views and local products. I picked up a few souvenirs, including some locally made argan oil and a beautiful Berber rug. The shop also offers multiple terraces with amazing views of the valley.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Auberge La Vallée des Figues for dinner. This auberge is known for its traditional Berber architecture and its terrace overlooking the mountains and valleys. The restaurant serves local dishes, and I opted for their specialty, lamb with figs, a true delight.

Reflecting on the day, I'm struck by the way the Dades Valley seamlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty. The ancient Citadelle Dades, the unique Turtle's Back, and the warm hospitality of the Berber people have created a truly unforgettable experience. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Monkey finger viewpoint and Azrou n itbirn. I'm also considering stopping by Café restaurant ASANFOU ATBIR for a drink. It's these moments of exploration and discovery that make travel so rewarding. As I prepare for another day of adventure, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible corner of the world.
The Dades Valley is more than just a destination; it's an experience that touches the soul. It's a place where the past comes alive, where nature's artistry is on full display, and where the warmth of human connection transcends cultural boundaries. It's a place that will stay with me long after I've left its stunning landscapes behind.
I'm also reminded of the importance of supporting local businesses and engaging with the community in a sustainable way. By staying in local guesthouses, eating at local restaurants, and purchasing locally made products, I'm contributing to the economic well-being of the Dades Valley and helping to preserve its unique cultural heritage. And, on a more personal note, I'm grateful for the chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and reconnect with nature. As an urban beekeeper, I spend my days surrounded by concrete and steel, so it's refreshing to immerse myself in the natural beauty of the Dades Valley and breathe in the fresh mountain air.
