Waterfall Wonders and Culinary Delights

Today was all about immersing myself in the natural beauty of Yakushima and savoring the unique flavors this island has to offer. It's amazing how much a single day can hold when you're surrounded by such stunning scenery and delicious food. From cascading waterfalls to cozy bars, every moment felt like a new discovery.

My day began with an early start at Yakushima Furusato Market Island Megumi Kan for breakfast. I decided to try their local specialty which was the deep-fried flying fish combo. It was a recommendation from a local I met on the ferry, and I must say, it didn't disappoint. The fish was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a unique flavor that I hadn't experienced before. It came with a side of miso soup and rice, providing a hearty start to my day.

After breakfast, I set off to explore the majestic Ohko Waterfall. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the island's lush greenery. As I approached the waterfall, I could hear the thunderous roar of the water cascading down. The sight was simply breathtaking. The water plunged from a height of 88 meters into an emerald-green pool below. I spent a good hour there, taking in the stunning views and feeling the refreshing spray on my face. It's moments like these that make me appreciate the raw power and beauty of nature.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Next on my itinerary was Senpiro Falls. Unlike Ohko Waterfall, which allows you to get quite close to the base, Senpiro Falls offers a more distant, panoramic view. The waterfall has a 60-meter drop, cascading over a massive granite rock. The sheer size of the rock face, said to resemble a thousand people holding hands, is awe-inspiring. I took some photos from the observation deck, trying to capture the grandeur of the scene. It's a popular spot for tourists, but the view is well worth sharing.

For lunch, I headed to Kamogawa Restaurant, known for its local seafood and Japanese dishes. I opted for the sashimi set special, eager to taste the fresh catch of the day. The set included a variety of sashimi, such as shrimp, squid, yellowtail, and mackerel, all incredibly fresh and flavorful. It also came with flying fish cake and miso soup, providing a well-rounded culinary experience. The restaurant was bustling with both locals and tourists, a testament to its popularity.

After a day of exploring waterfalls and savoring local cuisine, I decided to unwind at Ambar, a local bar known for its cozy atmosphere. It was a perfect way to relax and reflect on the day's adventures. I ordered a local craft beer and chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the island's culture and history. It's these interactions that often provide the most memorable experiences during my travels.

For dinner, I ventured to DINING CAFE BAR SLOW, an Italian restaurant that came highly recommended. I had heard rave reviews about their handmade pasta, and I was eager to try it for myself. The restaurant had a charming, rustic ambiance, with views of the surrounding forest. I ordered the carbonara, and it was indeed one of the best I've ever had. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the sauce was rich and creamy, with a hint of garlic. It was a delightful culinary experience that perfectly capped off my day.

As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I had today. Yakushima has a way of captivating you with its natural beauty and unique culture. It's a place where you can disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature and yourself.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve into the island's history and culture with visits to the Yakushima Museum of History and Folklore and the Yakushima Environmental and Cultural Village Center. I'm also looking forward to trying Michikusa for breakfast, At Pesca for lunch, and Subarashi Indian Restaurant for dinner. And perhaps a bit of shopping at Moriizumi.

Even though David and Sophie aren't here with me on this trip, I know they would have loved today's adventures. I can already picture Sophie splashing around in the pools near the waterfalls and David enjoying the local seafood. I'm sure I'll be back here with them one day, sharing these experiences together.

Until then, Yakushima, thank you for another unforgettable day.

It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel. The world is full of incredible places and experiences, waiting to be discovered. And I'm grateful to have the opportunity to share them with you all.

I am also realizing that I need to get a portable phone charger, and a Japanese phrasebook, both of which I forgot at home in Toronto! And I should really have brought sunscreen!

Good night from Yakushima! I can't wait for tomorrow!
