A Relaxing Day in the Blue Pearl

Today was all about soaking in the unique atmosphere of Chefchaouen, a city that feels like stepping into a dream. After several days of more active exploration, Liam and I decided to take it easy and enjoy the simple pleasures of this beautiful place. It was a day filled with gentle wanderings, delicious food, and quiet moments of appreciation.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Café & restaurant Meftah. We snagged a table with a view, watching as the town slowly came to life. I ordered a traditional Moroccan breakfast – eggs with khlea (preserved meat), served with warm bread and olives. Liam, ever the coffee aficionado, opted for a strong espresso and a flaky pastry. The friendly staff and the beautiful view made it a perfect start to the day.

After breakfast, we strolled to Plaza Mohammed V. The plaza is a serene park that acts as a central hub. The manicured lawns and colorful flowers provided a welcome splash of green against the blue backdrop of the city. We found a shaded bench and simply sat, watching locals and tourists alike enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. A group of children played football nearby, their laughter echoing through the square. It was a lovely spot to unwind and take in the beauty of Chefchaouen.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the simple, everyday moments that unfold within them.

Next on our agenda was a visit to Casa Familia. While we aren't staying there, I had read about its beautiful Moroccan style and wanted to see it. It was a pleasant walk, allowing us to further soak in the blue streets. It is located a short walk from the Medina. The hotel was charming, with a lovely view of the mountains.

For lunch, we ventured to Restaurant Jbaria. Tucked away from the main tourist streets, this cozy restaurant offered a delightful escape. We climbed to the beautiful terrace upstairs, where we relaxed and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere. I decided to try the goat tagine with dates and raisins, a local specialty, while Liam went for the couscous. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and the portions were generous. The fresh, high-quality bread was a highlight, and we savored every bite.

In the late afternoon, we sought refuge from the sun at Café Mundial. This café is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Liam and I both ordered their Moroccan mint tea. We sat outside, enjoying the view of the surrounding mountains and the lively street scene.

As the day drew to a close, we chose Restaurant Terrasse Djebli for dinner. We secured a table on the terrace, eager to witness the sunset over the Rif Mountains. The views were breathtaking, and the atmosphere was magical as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. I opted for the grilled chicken, marinated to perfection and served with flavorful dips, while Liam chose the tagine. The attentive staff ensured we had a memorable evening, and we lingered over our meal, savoring the last moments of the day.

Reflecting on today, I am reminded of how important it is to slow down and appreciate the simple things. Chefchaouen has a way of captivating you with its serene beauty and inviting you to embrace a slower pace of life. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Bab El Hammar and Derb Zaghdoud [see tomorrow's itinerary]. I am excited to see what other hidden gems this blue city holds.

Before heading back to Hotel Dar Mounir, we stopped for a nightcap at Café Mundial again. The café had transformed into a lively sports bar, with locals gathered to watch a football match. We enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere, sipping our drinks and soaking in the last moments of our relaxing day.

Chefchaouen continues to surprise and delight us at every turn. I am grateful for these moments of peace and connection, and I look forward to more adventures in this magical blue city.

I am also glad that I remembered to pack sunscreen and sunglasses, as the sun can be quite strong even in September. I was glad that I had packed my comfortable walking shoes, because the city is full of stairs. I am however regretting forgetting a light jacket, as the evenings can get a bit chilly.

“Travel is not about the destination, but the moments and memories created along the way.”

This evening, as I write this from our cozy room at Hotel Dar Mounir, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had today. It's these simple, unplanned moments that often become the most cherished memories of a trip. I am looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, but for now, I will rest and dream of blue streets and Moroccan flavors.
