A Day in the Azure City

Today was all about getting lost – intentionally, of course – in the mesmerizing blue labyrinth of Chefchaouen. With Liam by my side, I set out to soak in the atmosphere, discover hidden corners, and truly immerse myself in the local culture. From the bustling marketplaces to the quiet, winding alleyways, every moment felt like stepping into a postcard.

Our day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Assaada. The restaurant was a cozy haven tucked away in the blue-washed streets, offering a delightful array of traditional dishes. I opted for the *ftour beldi*, a local breakfast of goat cheese, eggs, and olive oil. Liam, ever the adventurous one, tried a tagine, even for breakfast! The mint tea was, as always, the perfect start to the day—sweet, refreshing, and utterly essential. The staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.

With our bellies full and spirits high, we ventured towards Bab El Hammar. The walk there was an experience in itself, navigating the narrow, winding streets, each turn revealing a new shade of blue. The buildings seemed to lean in, creating a sense of intimacy and wonder. Locals were setting up their shops, the air filled with the sounds of bartering and friendly chatter. I couldn't resist snapping photos at every corner; the light here is simply magical, casting a serene glow on everything it touches.

The beauty of Chefchaouen isn't just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant life that thrives within them.

Next on our list was Derb Zaghdoud, a charming alleyway known for its traditional architecture. As we strolled down Derb Zaghdoud, I was struck by the intricate details of the buildings – the ornate doors, the delicate tilework, the vibrant colors peeking from behind the blue facades. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining the lives of the people who have called this place home for generations. I made a mental note to look up Dar Meziana, a highly-rated bed and breakfast located in Derb Zaghdoud, for future visits.

Of course, no day in Chefchaouen would be complete without a bit of shopping. We made our way to Hibart Souvenirs Shop, a treasure trove of Moroccan craftsmanship. From intricately designed ceramics to colorful textiles, the shop was a feast for the eyes. I was particularly drawn to the handwoven rugs, each one unique and telling its own story. Liam, on the other hand, was fascinated by the leather goods. We ended up buying a beautiful blue ceramic bowl and a small leather wallet, perfect mementos of our time in Chefchaouen.

For lunch, we decided on Restaurant Morisco, drawn in by its reputation for regional specialties and its lively terrace overlooking Place Outa el Hammam. We managed to snag a table on the terrace, which offered a fantastic view of the bustling square. I opted for a traditional tagine with lamb, while Liam chose a Mediterranean-style pizza. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was buzzing with energy. It was the perfect spot to relax, people-watch, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Chefchaouen.

As the afternoon wore on, we continued our exploration of the Medina, getting delightfully lost in its labyrinthine streets. We stumbled upon hidden courtyards, vibrant workshops, and tiny tea houses, each one offering a unique glimpse into local life. I was particularly fascinated by the dye markets, where vibrant skeins of wool hung like rainbows, and the air was thick with the earthy scent of natural dyes.

Before dinner, we took some time to simply sit and observe the world around us. We found a quiet spot near the Kasbah and watched as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the blue city. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder to slow down and appreciate the simple beauty of life. I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical place with Liam.

For our final meal of the day, we chose Restaurant Lalla Messaouda, known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and cozy ambiance. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet corner of the Medina, offering a welcome escape from the bustling streets. The menu featured a variety of traditional dishes, all made with fresh, local ingredients. I decided to try the Moroccan lamb, while Liam went for the couscous. Both dishes were incredibly flavorful and satisfying, a perfect end to a perfect day.

As we walked back to Hotel Dar Mounir, hand in hand, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's adventures. Chefchaouen had truly captured my heart with its beauty, its charm, and its vibrant culture. It was a day of discovery, of immersion, and of pure joy. I already can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, with plans to visit Bab El Ain and Chefchaouen Gate, and maybe even sneak in a drink at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Bab El Ain and Chefchaouen Gate, and perhaps even enjoy a drink at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin. But for now, I'm content to drift off to sleep, dreaming of blue streets and Moroccan adventures.

I'm so glad Liam is here with me on this trip. It's so nice to have company, especially when exploring a new place.

I'm also glad I remembered to pack my sunscreen today! My fair complexion is definitely prone to sunburns, and I would have been miserable if I had forgotten it.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Bab El Ain and Chefchaouen Gate. I'm excited to see what they have to offer!
