Exploring the Blue Streets of Chefchaouen with Liam
Day 10: A Day of Gates and Good Food in Chefchaouen
Exploring Chefchaouen's historic gates, savoring Moroccan cuisine, and soaking in the blue city's charm with my husband, Liam.
Gates and Grub in the Blue Pearl
Today was a delightful blend of history, culture, and culinary exploration here in Chefchaouen. Liam and I set out to discover more of this blue-washed city, and it certainly didn't disappoint. It's amazing how each day here brings new perspectives and hidden gems.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bab Souk. It was conveniently located near one of the city gates, which was perfect for starting our explorations. The aroma of freshly baked bread and mint tea filled the air, drawing us in. I opted for some traditional Moroccan pancakes, while Liam, ever the adventurous one, tried a local pastry filled with almonds and honey. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of walking and sightseeing. We sat outside, enjoying the crisp morning air and watching the locals begin their day. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, a stark contrast to the quiet mornings we’re used to back in Dublin. It reminded me of the bustling markets back home in Konstanz, albeit with a unique Moroccan flair.

After breakfast, we strolled towards Bab El Ain, one of Chefchaouen's famed city gates. The gate itself is a beautiful piece of architecture, steeped in history. As we walked through it, I couldn't help but imagine all the people who had passed through this very spot over the centuries. It felt like stepping back in time. The blue-washed buildings surrounding the gate created a stunning visual, making it a photographer’s dream. I made sure to snap plenty of pictures, trying to capture the essence of this magical place. Liam, with his keen eye for detail, pointed out the intricate designs on the gate and the surrounding walls. It’s moments like these that make traveling with him so special; he always notices things I might otherwise miss.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue-washed walls, but in the stories and experiences woven into its very fabric.
Next on our list was the Chefchaouen Gate. This gate is another significant landmark, offering a glimpse into the city's rich heritage. As we approached, we were struck by its grandeur and the way it seemed to beckon us into the heart of the medina. The gate is not just an entrance; it’s a symbol of the city's identity, a testament to its enduring spirit. We spent some time exploring the area around the gate, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the architecture. The blend of Andalusian and Riffian influences was evident in every detail, from the intricate carvings to the vibrant colors. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the beauty and history that surrounded us.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Ali Baba, drawn in by the promise of authentic Moroccan cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. We managed to snag a table on the terrace, which offered a stunning view of the city. I ordered a traditional tagine with chicken and vegetables, while Liam opted for the couscous with lamb. The tagine was flavorful and aromatic, the chicken tender and succulent. Liam's couscous was equally delicious, the lamb perfectly seasoned and the couscous light and fluffy. We savored every bite, washing it down with refreshing mint tea. It was the perfect midday treat, a true taste of Morocco.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to indulge in a little relaxation at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin, a local bar known for its enchanting atmosphere. The bar was dimly lit, with colorful lamps casting a warm glow on the walls. We ordered some local beers and settled into a cozy corner, enjoying the ambiance and the company. The bar had a unique charm, a blend of Moroccan tradition and modern comfort. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. We chatted, laughed, and soaked in the atmosphere, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical place together. I made a mental note to try their lemon chicken tagine next time.

For dinner, we chose Chez Foad, a restaurant recommended by a local we met earlier in the day. The restaurant was tucked away in a quiet alley, away from the hustle and bustle of the main streets. It had a cozy, intimate atmosphere, perfect for a romantic dinner. We started with some traditional Moroccan salads, followed by a hearty stew with beef and vegetables. The food was simple but delicious, cooked with love and care. The flavors were rich and authentic, a true reflection of Moroccan cuisine. As we ate, we talked about our day, sharing our favorite moments and reflecting on the beauty of Chefchaouen. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

As we walked back to Hotel Dar Mounir, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment and gratitude. Chefchaouen had captured our hearts, its blue-washed streets and vibrant culture leaving an indelible mark on our souls. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Vue panoramique de la plage and Cave Acher. I am excited to see what new adventures await us. Despite the slight sunburn I acquired today – I really should have remembered to pack that extra sunscreen – I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. It’s moments like these that make travel so rewarding, so enriching, so unforgettable. Good night from Chefchaouen!
