Finding Peace and Authentic Tastes in Chefchaouen

Today was a delightful immersion into the quieter, more authentic corners of Chefchaouen. While the blue streets are undeniably the main attraction, it's the serene parks and local eateries that truly capture the essence of this charming town. Liam and I were eager to explore beyond the bustling medina, and today’s itinerary promised just that.

Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at Café Sindibad. Nestled with a view overlooking Place Outa el Hammam, the cafe offered a delightful start to the day. I opted for the lemon chicken, while Liam enjoyed a traditional tagine. The mint tea, of course, was a must – its refreshing taste is quickly becoming a morning ritual.

After breakfast, we decided to visit Park Sidi Abdelhamid. The walk there was a pleasant stroll away from the medina's hustle and bustle. The park itself is a lush, green sanctuary, offering a tranquil escape from the vibrant blue streets. We found a shaded bench and simply soaked in the peaceful atmosphere, listening to the birds and enjoying the cool morning air. It was the perfect spot to take a break and appreciate the natural beauty of the region.

Sometimes, the most memorable travel experiences are found in the quiet moments of reflection and connection with nature.

Next on our list was Ras El Ma, a spring at the edge of the medina. This wasn't just a scenic spot; it was a hub of local life. We watched as women washed clothes in the stream, children played, and locals gathered to chat. The sound of the water cascading over the rocks was incredibly soothing, and the vibrant energy of the community was infectious. It was a wonderful glimpse into the daily rhythms of Chefchaouen. I even managed to capture some lovely photos of the small cascades downstream.

For lunch, we ventured to Sandwich Chez Aziz. This wasn't a fancy restaurant, but a humble spot serving up delicious and affordable sandwiches. Liam went for a classic kefta sandwich, while I tried one with grilled vegetables and harissa. It was simple, flavorful, and exactly what we needed for a midday energy boost.

In the late afternoon, with the sun beginning to dip, we decided to embrace the local custom of enjoying a drink at a bar. We found ourselves at Bar Oum Rabie, a charming spot known for its relaxed atmosphere. We sat outside, sipping on local beers and enjoying the lively chatter around us. It was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring and soak in the local ambiance.

As evening approached, we made our way to Restaurant Morisco for dinner. The restaurant boasts a terrace with panoramic views of the square, providing a stunning backdrop for our meal. We shared a tagine and a pastilla, savoring the rich flavors of Moroccan cuisine as the city lights twinkled below.

Before heading back to Hotel Dar Mounir, we took a final stroll through the medina. The blue streets were even more magical in the soft evening light. The day ended with a sense of contentment and a deeper appreciation for the simple joys of travel.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit Plaza Uta el Hamman and the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen. I'm particularly excited about visiting La Vida Colorada, a shop known for its unique finds. I'm hoping to pick up a few souvenirs to remind me of our time in this enchanting blue city. Liam is looking forward to trying Assaada for breakfast. I'm sure it will be another day filled with exploration and discovery.

Even though I had forgotten my power adapter, I was able to purchase one at a local shop in the medina. Hopefully tomorrow, I will get a chance to wear the light jacket I packed, as I hear the evenings can get cool in the mountains.
