A Day of Discovery in the Blue Pearl
Today, Liam and I dove deeper into the heart of Chefchaouen, eager to uncover more of its cultural treasures. After a couple of days wandering the winding blue streets, I was eager to understand more about the history and traditions of this unique place. It was a day filled with vibrant sights, fascinating insights, and, of course, delicious Moroccan flavors.
Our day began with a hearty Moroccan breakfast at Assaada. I opted for the traditional msemen, a flaky pancake served with honey and cheese, while Liam enjoyed a tagine. The strong coffee was exactly what we needed to kickstart our explorations. The restaurant had a lovely view, and the staff were very welcoming. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day of adventure. I made a mental note to try and recreate the msemen when we get back to Dublin, though I doubt it will taste quite the same without the Moroccan sunshine.

Fueled and ready, we headed to Plaza Uta el-Hammam. The plaza is the bustling heart of Chefchaouen's medina. Lined with cafes and restaurants, it’s the perfect spot for people-watching and soaking in the atmosphere. The square is shaded by tall trees, offering a welcome respite from the sun. We sat for a few minutes, enjoying the lively scene, before making our way to the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen.

The Ethnographic Museum is housed within the Kasbah, a 15th-century fortress that once protected the town. The museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the culture and history of the Chefchaouen region. Inside, we explored exhibits featuring traditional costumes, jewelry, musical instruments, and ancient weapons. I was particularly intrigued by the displays showcasing the Berber, Arab, and Andalusian influences that have shaped the region over the centuries. Liam, ever the history buff, was captivated by the ancient maps and trade routes.

After spending a couple of hours at the museum, we decided it was time for lunch. We chose Le Coin, a restaurant recommended for its tasty dishes and beautiful views. The menu was diverse, offering everything from salads and pizzas to traditional Moroccan dishes. I opted for a flavorful tagine, while Liam chose a pizza. The food was delicious, and the views of the blue streets below were simply stunning.

With our bellies full, we were ready for some shopping. La Vida Colorada caught my eye with its display of unique home goods and local handicrafts. I’m always on the lookout for sustainable and ethically made products, and this shop seemed to fit the bill. I ended up buying a beautiful handwoven rug made from natural fibers. It will be a perfect addition to our living room in Dublin, a little piece of Chefchaouen to remind us of our travels. Liam found a small, intricately carved wooden box that he plans to use for storing his collection of guitar picks.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back to Plaza Uta el-Hammam. The square was even more lively than before, filled with locals and tourists alike. Street performers entertained the crowds, and the aroma of mint tea filled the air. We found a cozy spot at one of the cafes and ordered a pot of traditional Moroccan mint tea. Sipping the sweet, fragrant tea, we watched the world go by, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience this magical place. I tried to picture what life would be like for the locals who call Chefchaouen home. It's a world away from our busy lives in Dublin, but there's a certain charm and simplicity here that I find incredibly appealing.
For dinner, we decided to try Restaurant Triana. The restaurant is known for its blend of traditional Moroccan flavors and modern culinary techniques. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I ordered the seafood pastilla, a savory pie filled with fish, shrimp, and spices. Liam chose the lamb tagine, which was slow-cooked to perfection. Both dishes were absolutely delicious, a perfect end to a perfect day.

As we walked back to Hotel Dar Mounir, the blue streets of Chefchaouen seemed even more enchanting in the soft evening light. The air was cool and crisp, and the stars twinkled overhead. I thought about how lucky we are to be able to experience such incredible places together. Travel has a way of opening your eyes and expanding your horizons, and I’m so grateful for every moment of it.

Tomorrow, we’re planning to explore more of the Medina with Blue Medina Tours [if it's open] and visit Bab El Ain, one of the town's historic gates. I'm also hoping we can find some time to relax at Sunset at Sunset, a bar known for its stunning views. But for now, it’s time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure in the Blue Pearl of Morocco. I'm excited to see what new discoveries await us.
Before drifting off to sleep, I took a moment to reflect on the day. Chefchaouen is more than just a pretty blue town. It’s a place with a rich history, a vibrant culture, and a warm, welcoming spirit. I’m so glad we decided to come here, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. The thought of finding a bargain or two also crossed my mind, as I'm hoping to pick up a few more souvenirs before we leave. Perhaps I'll find something special in one of the shops near Plaza Uta el-Hammam.
I also read that forest fires had broken out on Tuesday in the Granja and Bab Taza areas, and I'm hoping that the authorities manage to contain them as soon as possible.
The image of the blue-washed streets, the aroma of mint tea, and the sounds of Berber music filled my senses as I closed my eyes, already dreaming of what tomorrow will bring.
