Finding the Heart of Chefchaouen

Today, Liam and I set out to discover the true essence of Chefchaouen beyond its famous blue walls. We wanted to immerse ourselves in the local culture, explore the artistry, and savor the flavors that make this town so unique. It was a day filled with vibrant colors, delightful encounters, and mouthwatering food, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for this Moroccan gem.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Cremeri Elmaataoui. It was a cozy little spot, perfect for starting the day. I ordered a traditional Moroccan pastry, while Liam opted for a hearty sandwich. We sat outside, soaking in the morning sun, and watched as the town slowly came to life. It was a simple pleasure, but one that set the tone for a wonderful day.

After breakfast, we strolled towards the Ensemble d'artisanat complexe, eager to see the local craftsmanship. As a marketing assistant at a sustainable packaging company, I’m always drawn to artisanal creations and the stories behind them. The complex was a treasure trove of handmade goods – intricately woven carpets, vibrant ceramics, and beautifully carved wooden items. I was particularly fascinated by the wood painting. Liam, ever the patient husband, followed me around as I examined each stall, chatting with the artisans and learning about their techniques. I even picked up a small, hand-painted bowl as a souvenir – a little piece of Chefchaouen to bring back to our Dublin home.

The true beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant spirit and artistry of its people.

Next on our list was Place El Haouta, a bustling square in the heart of the Medina. The square was alive with activity – locals chatting, children playing, and the aroma of spices filling the air. We found a cozy café and ordered mint tea, a must-try in Morocco. Sitting there, sipping our tea, we watched the world go by. It was the perfect spot for people-watching and soaking in the atmosphere of Chefchaouen. The square is surrounded by quaint cafes and traditional Moroccan shops. Street performers and artisans showcase their talents, adding a unique entertainment experience.

For lunch, we decided to try Cafe & restaurant Meftah, recommended by several locals. The restaurant had a charming ambiance, and the menu was filled with traditional Moroccan dishes. I opted for a tagine, while Liam went for the couscous. Both dishes were incredibly flavorful, and we savored every bite. The restaurant also offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains, making it a truly memorable dining experience. We sat at an outdoor seating area and enjoyed the views of the vibrant blue streets.

After lunch, we couldn't resist the allure of Boutique EL-ASRI, a shop known for its unique finds. As someone who appreciates ethical fashion, I was excited to explore its offerings. The shop was filled with an eclectic mix of clothing, accessories, and home decor items, all with a distinct Moroccan flair. I found a beautiful scarf made from locally sourced wool, perfect for the cooler Dublin evenings. Liam, surprisingly, took an interest in a leather bag, a departure from his usual tech-focused shopping habits. It was fun to see him embrace the local style.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Bar Chaouen for dinner. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, and the menu offered a mix of Moroccan and international cuisine. We decided to try the local seafood, which was incredibly fresh and delicious. The restaurant also had a rooftop terrace, offering panoramic views of the town. Sipping mint tea, we watched the sunset over Chefchaouen, painting the blue walls in hues of orange and pink. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Today was more than just sightseeing; it was about connecting with the heart and soul of Chefchaouen. From the artisan workshops to the bustling squares and the delicious local cuisine, every moment was a sensory delight. I feel like I’m getting a better sense of the city’s rhythm, and it’s making me appreciate our time here even more.

Thinking about tomorrow, I am excited for a change of pace as we plan to immerse ourselves in nature at Parc National de Talassemtane. I am looking forward to hiking and taking in the views from Jebel El-Kelaa Summit, hopefully, I will not forget my light jacket this time!

As I reflect on the day, I am reminded of why I love to travel – it’s not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new cultures and connecting with people from all walks of life. And Chefchaouen, with its blue walls and vibrant spirit, has certainly captured my heart. Now, off to plan for our nature adventure tomorrow!
