A Daydream in Blue

Today was nothing short of magical. Chefchaouen, with its labyrinthine blue alleyways, has completely captivated me. It felt like stepping into a dream, where every corner turned revealed a new shade of azure and a fresh burst of Moroccan charm. Liam and I embraced the spirit of adventure, letting the city guide us through its hidden gems and vibrant culture.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Toda Creperie & Ice Cream. I opted for a classic Nutella crepe, while Liam, ever the adventurous one, chose a savory crepe with local cheese. The crepes were delicious, providing the perfect energy boost for a day of exploring. The cafe itself was cozy, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home.

Fueled and ready, we joined a guided tour with Blue Medina Tours. Our guide, whose name I unfortunately didn't catch, was a wealth of knowledge, sharing fascinating stories about the history and culture of Chefchaouen. I learned that Chefchaouen was founded in 1471 as a small kasbah by Ali ibn Rashid al-Alami to defend against Portuguese invasions of northern Morocco. He explained that the blue color, which is so iconic, is believed by some to keep mosquitos away, while others say it symbolizes the sky and heaven, reminding people to lead spiritual lives. I found it fascinating that the tradition of painting the walls blue may have originated with Jewish refugees fleeing the Spanish Inquisition.

The tour was incredibly insightful, offering a deeper understanding of the city's rich heritage and vibrant culture.

Next on our itinerary was Bab El Ain, one of the main entrances to the old medina. The archway itself was beautifully adorned, inviting visitors to step through and immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the medina. As we strolled through the narrow, winding streets, we were surrounded by shops selling handmade crafts, spices, and local delicacies. The blue-washed walls created a serene backdrop, and every corner seemed to offer a new photo opportunity. It was easy to see why Chefchaouen is a must-visit destination in Morocco.

For lunch, we ventured to Chez Foad, a local favorite known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. I decided to try the tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew, while Liam went for the couscous. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and the portions were incredibly generous. It was the perfect spot to refuel after a morning of exploring.

As the afternoon wore on, we found ourselves drawn to the promise of a stunning sunset. We made our way to Sunset at sunset, a bar known for its captivating views. Luckily we arrived in good time, as the bar was open from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM. We savored refreshing orange juices as we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in a breathtaking array of colors. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, making it the perfect place to unwind and reflect on our day. The bar's location, nestled in Jamaa, offered a tranquil escape from the bustling city.

Dinner was at Restaurant Morisco, where we enjoyed a delightful mix of Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. I opted for the seafood pasta, while Liam chose a Moroccan-style pizza. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. It was a lovely way to end our day in Chefchaouen.

As we walked back to Hotel Dar Mounir, hand in hand, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we shared today. Chefchaouen has a way of capturing your heart, and I know I'll cherish these memories for years to come. I was glad that I brought my camera to capture the unique charm of Chefchaouen. Although I nearly forgot my light jacket for the cooler evenings, the warm atmosphere of the city made up for it.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Ensemble d'artisanat complexe and Place El Haouta, and Liam is keen to visit Boutique EL-ASRI. I'm also looking forward to trying out Cremeri Elmaataoui for breakfast and Restaurant Bar Chaouen for dinner. I am sure we'll discover even more hidden gems and create lasting memories. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

Looking back on today, it’s funny to think that I was once so regimented, always sticking to a strict schedule. Now, I find myself embracing the unexpected, letting the rhythm of a new place guide my steps. It’s a refreshing change, and Liam seems to appreciate my newfound spontaneity. Maybe Dublin has rubbed off on me more than I thought!

The beauty of Chefchaouen is not just in its blue-washed walls, but in the warmth of its people, the richness of its culture, and the sense of peace that permeates every corner. It's a place where you can truly lose yourself and find yourself all at once.

Back at the hotel, I was thinking about my sustainable packaging company back in Dublin. I wonder if we could source some of the natural dyes used to color the buildings here. It would be an amazing way to bring a piece of Chefchaouen to our products, while also supporting local artisans.

As I drift off to sleep, I can still see the vibrant blue hues dancing in my mind. Chefchaouen, you have truly stolen a piece of my heart.
