A Day of Discoveries in the Blue City

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the tranquility of nature with the vibrant energy of art and culture. From peaceful parks to thought-provoking exhibitions and lively rooftop bars, Chefchaouen revealed yet another layer of its enchanting character. It's days like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace and soak in every moment.

My Saturday began with a leisurely breakfast at Restaurant Jbaria. It's conveniently located near Bab Ssour, and I had heard wonderful things about their terrace. The peaceful atmosphere was exactly what I needed to start the day. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with fresh bread, olives, and a flavorful lentil soup. It was hearty and delicious, providing the perfect fuel for the day ahead. The staff were incredibly welcoming, especially Brother Mustafa, who made sure I had everything I needed. I made a mental note to bring Maximilian here someday; he would absolutely love the cozy ambiance and authentic flavors.

With a full stomach and a sense of adventure, I set off to explore Park Sidi Abdelhamid. This park is a bit of a hidden gem, offering a serene escape from the bustling medina. As I walked through its lush greenery, I was struck by the contrast between the vibrant flowerbeds and the rugged mountainous backdrop. It was a perfect spot for quiet contemplation. Families were enjoying picnics on the spacious lawns, and the air was filled with the soothing sounds of nature. I spent a good hour simply wandering along the well-maintained pathways, taking in the beauty around me. It’s amazing how a simple park can offer such a sense of peace and tranquility. I found a quiet bench and spent some time writing in my travel journal, reflecting on my experiences in Chefchaouen so far.

Next on my itinerary was the Tetuan Modern Art Center. I took a Grand Taxi from Chefchaouen to Tetouan to explore the modern art scene. Housed in a beautifully renovated Andalusian building that once served as a train station, the museum was a surprising and unique find. The building itself is an architectural marvel, showcasing a blend of Moroccan and Spanish influences. Inside, I discovered a fascinating collection of modern paintings and sculptures from Moroccan, Spanish, and Andalusian artists dating from the 1950s to the present. The museum offered a glimpse into the artistic dialogue between Morocco and Spain, highlighting the region's rich cultural history. I was particularly impressed by the works of students from the School of Fine Arts (INBA) of Tetouan; their creativity and talent were truly inspiring. It's wonderful to see how Tetouan continues to be a meeting place for artists, drawn by its beauty and creative energy.

After immersing myself in art, it was time for a late lunch. I chose Café & restaurant Meftah based on a recommendation I had read online. The reviews mentioned its amazing view, and I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant offered a panoramic vista of Chefchaouen, with the blue-washed buildings cascading down the hillside. I ordered a traditional tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices as I soaked in the breathtaking scenery. The service was friendly and attentive, making the experience even more enjoyable. As I ate, I watched the clouds drift across the sky, casting shadows on the blue city below. It was a truly magical moment.

As evening approached, I made my way to Cafe Clock. I had heard so much about this place, and I was eager to experience its rooftop ambiance. The cafe is known for its fusion of Moroccan and international cuisine, and I decided to try their famous camel burger. It was definitely a unique culinary adventure! The camel meat had a distinctive flavor, somewhere between lamb and venison, and it was surprisingly lean and tender. The rooftop offered stunning views of Chefchaouen's medina, and the atmosphere was lively and vibrant. I sipped on a refreshing mint tea as I watched the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and pink.

Later, I decided to have dinner at Restaurant Triana, enticed by the promise of live music and a break from traditional Moroccan fare. The restaurant did not disappoint. The interior was lovely, with a nostalgic ambiance created by the live musicians. I ordered the seafood salad and a glass of Moroccan red wine. It was a delightful change of pace, and the food was delicious. The service was top-notch, making the entire experience thoroughly enjoyable. It reminded me of some of the cozy Italian restaurants Maximilian and I frequent in Heidelberg. It's always nice to find a little piece of home, even when you're thousands of miles away.

My day concluded with a leisurely stroll through the medina, soaking in the sights and sounds of Chefchaouen at night. The blue streets took on a different character under the moonlight, casting an ethereal glow. I stopped to listen to the sounds of locals chatting and children playing. The air was filled with the aroma of spices and freshly baked bread. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

As I reflect on my experiences today, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Chefchaouen has a way of captivating the soul, offering a blend of tranquility, beauty, and cultural richness. Tomorrow, being my last day, I plan to visit Lavadero de la ciudad and City View Point. I will also be having breakfast at Restaurant Dar El Salam, Lunch at Restaurant Hajji, and Dinner at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin. I might even pick up a souvenir at Bazar Sahara before heading back to Tangier. I am already looking forward to my next adventure, wherever it may lead. But for now, I am content to savor the memories of this incredible solo journey in the Blue Pearl of Morocco.

Traveling solo has allowed me to connect with this place on a deeper level, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to explore and discover. Until tomorrow!
