Wandering Through the Blue City's Heart
Today was all about immersing myself in the everyday life of Chefchaouen. I wanted to experience the city not just as a tourist, but as someone who was truly present, soaking in the sights, sounds, and flavors that make this place so unique. It was a day of simple pleasures, from the bustling markets to the quiet corners, each revealing a new layer of Chefchaouen's charm.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Hamsa. I had read so many great things about it, and I was eager to try their traditional Moroccan breakfast. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I ordered the ftour beldi, a local favorite, which included bread, olives, cheese, and a delicious mint tea. It was the perfect way to start my day, fueling me up for a day of exploring.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to explore Boulevard Mohamed V. This bustling street is the heart of modern Chefchaouen, a vibrant contrast to the serene blue alleys of the medina. The boulevard was alive with activity – locals going about their daily routines, children playing, and the sounds of vendors calling out their wares. I strolled along, taking in the sights and sounds, feeling the energy of the city.

To travel is to take a journey into yourself.
I couldn't resist popping into Hibart Souvenirs Shop. I wanted to find a little something to remind me of my time in Chefchaouen. The shop was a treasure trove of Moroccan craftsmanship, filled with colorful ceramics, intricate metalwork, and beautifully woven textiles. I spent ages browsing, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans. I finally settled on a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl, perfect for holding trinkets back home in Heidelberg.

Next on my list was Bab El Hammar, one of the main gates to the old city. As I approached, I was struck by its imposing presence, a reminder of Chefchaouen's rich history. The gate, with its distinctive brickwork, stood as a gateway between the old and the new, a passage through time. I walked through, imagining the countless people who had passed through this very spot over the centuries.

For lunch, I ventured to Restaurant Al Wiam, drawn in by its reputation for authentic Moroccan cuisine. Tucked away on Sidi al Buhali Street, it felt like stepping into someone's home. The restaurant is run by a group of women who create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. I ordered the couscous, a classic Moroccan dish, and it was absolutely divine. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the fresh, local ingredients and traditional spices.

After lunch, I decided to wander aimlessly through the medina, letting my curiosity guide me. I got wonderfully lost in the maze of blue alleys, each turn revealing a new vista, a new detail to admire. I stumbled upon hidden courtyards, tiny workshops, and colorful doorways, each telling its own story. I even found a local artisan crafting leather goods, his hands moving with practiced skill. I watched him for a while, mesmerized by his craft.
As the day drew to a close, I found myself drawn to Mounir Food for dinner. I had heard it was a great place to experience local halal cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. I ordered a tagine, a slow-cooked stew that is a staple of Moroccan cuisine. It was flavorful and comforting, the perfect way to end a day of exploring.

Sitting there, savoring the last bite of my tagine, I reflected on the day. It had been a day of simple pleasures, of immersing myself in the rhythm of Chefchaouen. I had wandered through bustling markets, marveled at historic gates, and savored authentic Moroccan cuisine. Each experience had added a new layer to my understanding of this enchanting city. I realized that sometimes, the best way to travel is to simply be present, to let the city reveal itself to you, one moment at a time.
I thought of Maximilian back in Heidelberg. I knew he would have loved wandering the blue streets with me, camera in hand, capturing the unique beauty of Chefchaouen. I made a mental note to bring him back here someday, to share this experience with him. He would especially enjoy the Tetuan Modern Art Center that I plan to visit tomorrow. I know he would appreciate the contemporary art scene here in Morocco.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore Park Sidi Abdelhamid, hoping to find a peaceful retreat amidst the city's hustle and bustle. I'm also looking forward to visiting the Tetuan Modern Art Center, eager to see the contemporary art scene in this part of the world. And of course, I'll be sure to stop by Cafe Clock for a relaxing evening, soaking in the atmosphere and perhaps enjoying some live music.
As I walked back to Hotel Barcelona, the city was bathed in the soft glow of the evening light. The air was cool and crisp, and the sounds of the city were slowly fading away. I felt a sense of contentment, a feeling of being truly present in this moment, in this place. Chefchaouen had cast its spell on me, and I knew that I would carry its blue-tinted memories with me long after I left.

Back at the hotel, I started writing in my travel journal, capturing all the details of the day. I wanted to remember every moment, every sight, every sound, every flavor. I also realized that I had completely forgotten my universal power adapter! Luckily the hotel had one I could borrow. I really need to remember to make a packing list next time!
As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamed of blue alleys, bustling markets, and the warm smiles of the Moroccan people. Chefchaouen, you have captured my heart.
I am excited about what tomorrow brings, but for now, it is time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure in the Blue Pearl of Morocco.
