A Day Among the Blues

Today was all about soaking in the panoramic views and vibrant culture that Chefchaouen so effortlessly offers. From the moment I woke up, I knew it was going to be a day filled with exploration and discovery. The air was crisp, a typical March morning, and I was eager to start my adventure.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at BILMOS. This charming spot is known for its vegan options, which was a pleasant surprise. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast crepe, modified to be vegan of course, while watching the town slowly wake up. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was just perfect for setting a positive tone for the day. It's amazing how a simple meal can become a cherished memory when enjoyed in such a beautiful setting.

The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant life that thrives within them.

After breakfast, I made my way towards Hero Eagle, a viewpoint that promised stunning vistas of Chefchaouen and the surrounding Rif Mountains. The walk itself was an experience, navigating through the maze-like streets, each corner revealing a new shade of blue. I paused frequently, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of this unique town. The Hero Eagle offered exactly what it promised: a breathtaking panorama. From up there, the blue city sprawled beneath me, a sea of cobalt and azure, punctuated by the green of the mountains. I spent a good hour just taking it all in, feeling grateful for the chance to witness such beauty.

Next on my list was Tuiles colorées, another Instagrammable spot in Chefchaouen. These colorful tiles added a vibrant contrast to the predominantly blue surroundings. I found myself admiring the intricate patterns and the way the sunlight played on the glazed surfaces. It was a photographer's dream, and I happily snapped away, trying to capture the perfect shot. The area was relatively quiet, allowing me to enjoy the artistry and craftsmanship without the hustle and bustle of crowds.

For lunch, I decided to try Traditional kitchen, a local eatery recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. I opted for a vegetarian tagine, a flavorful stew of vegetables and spices served in a traditional clay pot. It was hearty, comforting, and exactly what I needed after a morning of exploring. The restaurant was simple but charming, with a cozy atmosphere that made me feel right at home.

As the afternoon wore on, I found myself drawn to Café Mundial, a popular spot known for its lively atmosphere. I settled in with a refreshing mint tea, watching locals and tourists mingle and chat. The café had a certain energy, a sense of community that was infectious. It was a great place to relax, people-watch, and soak in the local vibe. I even struck up a conversation with a fellow traveler from Spain, sharing stories and travel tips.

Dinner was at Restaurant Dar El Salam, a place recommended for its traditional Moroccan ambiance and cuisine. The restaurant was beautifully decorated, with intricate mosaics and comfortable seating. I indulged in a delicious couscous dish, savoring the flavors of Morocco. The service was impeccable, and the overall experience was truly memorable.

Before heading back to Hotel Barcelona, I took a leisurely stroll through the medina, enjoying the cool evening air and the soft glow of the streetlights. The town had a different feel at night, quieter but still vibrant. I couldn't resist stopping at a local bakery, picking up a few sweet treats to enjoy back at the hotel.

Today was a reminder of why I love solo travel. It allows me the freedom to explore at my own pace, to discover hidden gems, and to connect with people and places in a meaningful way. Chefchaouen has captured my heart with its beauty, its culture, and its warm hospitality. As I reflect on the day, I feel grateful for the experiences and excited for what tomorrow holds. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Boulevard Mohamed V and Bab El Hammar, and maybe even do some souvenir shopping at Hibart Souvenirs Shop. I'm also looking forward to trying Restaurant Hamsa for breakfast, Restaurant Al Wiam for lunch, and Mounir Food for dinner. It's going to be another day of adventure in this magical blue city.

Even though I forgot my universal power adapter and lightweight rain jacket, I managed just fine. I'm glad I packed my comfortable walking shoes, camera, travel journal, sunscreen, and reusable water bottle, though. These items were essential for my exploration today.

Back in Heidelberg, Maximilian is probably diving deep into data, but I’m sure he’d love the blue hues and the tagine. I can't wait to share all my stories with him when I get back. For now, though, I'm off to dreamland, filled with visions of blue.

And, as a final note, I am thrilled to have discovered that Chefchaouen is home to the hadra chefchaounia, a unique Sufi musical tradition performed exclusively by women. I will try to catch a performance before I leave!
