Exploring the Heart of the Andes: A Family Adventure in Cusco
Day 10: Ancient Bridges and Mirror Lakes: A Journey Through Time in Cusco
Explore the cultural heart of Cusco with a visit to the last Inca rope bridge and the serene Laguna Huaypo. A day of history and beauty.

Bridging the Past, Reflecting on the Present
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took us from the tranquil reflections of a high-altitude lake to the heart-stopping heights of an ancient Inca bridge. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the chance to touch history, to breathe in the same air as civilizations long past, and to share these moments with my family.
Our day began with breakfast at El Mesón de Don Tomas. The aroma of Peruvian coffee filled the air as we settled into the cozy restaurant. I opted for a hearty causa, while Lena enjoyed some tamales, and Kai devoured a plate of picarones. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. The reviews I had read mentioned the friendly staff, and they were spot on. Giovanni and Juan Carlos made us feel right at home.

With our bellies full, we set off towards Laguna Huaypo. The drive itself was a treat, winding through the undulating hills of the Sacred Valley. I couldn't help but think of my home in Hilo, Hawaii, with its own volcanic landscapes and lush greenery. The landscape here, though different, evoked a similar sense of awe and wonder. As we ascended, the air grew crisper, and the views became more panoramic. Kai, ever the observant one, pointed out a couple of Andean gulls soaring overhead. I wished I hadn't forgotten my binoculars; bird watching would have been amazing here.

Finally, we arrived at Laguna Huaypo, a mirror of the sky nestled high in the Andes. The water was so still, it reflected the surrounding mountains with perfect clarity. It was breathtaking. Lena, with her curator's eye, was captivated by the way the light played across the surface of the water. We spent a good hour simply wandering along the shore, soaking in the serenity. I couldn't resist skipping a few stones across the glassy surface, a simple pleasure that brought a smile to my face. I imagined what it would be like to kayak on the lagoon, a truly immersive experience in this tranquil setting.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest places.
After Huaypo, we embarked on a journey to Qeswachaka, the last remaining Inca rope bridge. The drive was longer, taking us deeper into the Andes. The landscape shifted, becoming more rugged and dramatic. We passed through small villages, where life seemed to move at a slower pace. It was a stark reminder of the resilience and adaptability of the Quechua people, who have maintained their traditions for centuries.

As we approached Qeswachaka, I could feel a sense of anticipation building. I had read about this bridge, this testament to Inca ingenuity, but nothing could have prepared me for the reality. Spanning the Apurímac River, the bridge swayed gently in the breeze, a delicate thread connecting past and present. The bridge is made entirely of woven grass, a technique passed down through generations. It's hard to believe that something so seemingly fragile could be so strong.
Before crossing, I took a moment to learn more about the bridge's history and cultural significance. Qeswachaka is more than just a crossing point; it's a symbol of community unity and cooperation. Each year, the local communities gather to renew the bridge, a practice that dates back to Inca times. This act of communal effort reinforces social ties and preserves ancient knowledge. In 2013, UNESCO recognized Qeswachaka as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a testament to its unique value.
Taking a deep breath, I stepped onto the bridge. The sensation was unnerving, to say the least. The bridge swayed with each step, and I could feel the wind whipping through the narrow passage. Looking down at the rushing river below, my heart skipped a beat. Lena, ever the pragmatist, gripped the ropes tightly, while Kai, the fearless teenager, bounded across with ease. I couldn't help but feel a surge of pride as I watched him embrace this adventure.
Reaching the other side, I felt a sense of accomplishment, a connection to the past. I imagined what it must have been like for the Incas to traverse these bridges, carrying goods and messages across their vast empire. Qeswachaka is a living monument to their ingenuity and resilience.
For lunch, we stopped at Green Point Vegan Restaurant in Cusco. Though not usually a vegan, I was open to trying something new. The restaurant was recommended to me by a local and the space was gorgeous. All of the tables were in the covered garden, surrounded by plants as we enjoyed our meal. I ordered the Cusco Grill Platter, which was recommended by my server. It's a platter filled with a traditional peruvian stuffed chili pepper, oyster mushroom skewer, grilled potatoes and corn, served with cusquenian chili sauce, chimichurri, an avocado flower, and creole salad. It was a delightful surprise, a burst of flavors that left me feeling satisfied and energized.

Our last stop of the day was Souvenirs Cusco, where we hoped to find some mementos of our trip. The market was a riot of colors and textures, a sensory overload in the best possible way. We bargained for some alpaca scarves, a colorful chullo (Andean hat) for Kai, and a small ceramic llama for my desk back in Berlin. I made sure to check the quality of the items and to support local artisans, ensuring that our purchases had a positive impact on the community. It's always a good feeling to bring a piece of the culture home with you, a reminder of the experiences you've shared.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city, we made our way to Inka Wasi Restaurant Cusco for dinner. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with live music adding to the ambiance. We enjoyed some perfectly cooked trout and ceviche. The staff was cheerful and attentive, making us feel welcome. It was the perfect way to end a day of adventure and discovery.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our Peruvian adventure. We plan to visit the Cusco Planetarium and Rodadero, and perhaps enjoy a final drink at the Black Cat Bar Cusco. It’s bittersweet, knowing that our time here is coming to an end. But I know that the memories we've made, the experiences we've shared, will stay with us long after we've returned to Berlin. Peru has a way of getting under your skin, of capturing your heart. I have a feeling that this won't be our last visit.
As I reflect on the day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible country, to connect with its people, and to share these moments with my family. Travel is more than just ticking off destinations on a list; it's about opening your mind, expanding your horizons, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
