Whispers of the Past

Today was a day of unearthing Cusco's hidden stories, a journey that took us away from the bustling tourist trails and into the heart of its ancient soul. It's amazing how much history is layered within this city, waiting to be discovered by those who seek it. Lena, Kai and I set out with open minds and eager hearts, ready to embrace whatever secrets Cusco wished to share.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at La Huerta Del Tata. The name itself, meaning "the garden of Tata," hinted at the fresh, locally-sourced ingredients that awaited us. The restaurant exuded a cozy, eco-friendly vibe, and the menu was filled with enticing options. I opted for the traditional Peruvian breakfast, while Lena enjoyed a fruit and yogurt bowl, and Kai went for the pancakes. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

"Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners where history whispers to those who listen."

Our first stop was Qochapata, an Incan archaeological site tucked away in the hills overlooking Cusco. As we ascended, the air grew crisper, carrying the scent of eucalyptus from a nearby forest. The site was serene and almost deserted, a welcome change from the crowded main attractions. Qochapata, derived from Quechua words for "lake" (qucha) and "elevated place" (pata), offered panoramic views of Cusco's historic center and the surrounding Andean peaks. The ancient terraces and semi-reconstructed walls spoke of a rich past, inviting us to imagine the lives of those who once inhabited this elevated sanctuary. Kai, surprisingly, was captivated, clambering over the stones and peppering me with questions about the site's history. Lena, ever the curator, appreciated the quiet, undisturbed connection to the past that Qochapata offered.

Next on our itinerary was Huaca Sapantiana. The term Sapantiana comes from the Quechua words “SAPAN” meaning UNIQUE and “TIANA” meaning SEAT. This sacred Inca site, near the colonial aqueduct, is easily accessible from Cusco's Plaza Mayor. The aqueduct itself, built by the Jesuit Order in the 17th and 18th centuries, is an impressive feat of engineering, with four levels of arches rising above the P'ujru River. We walked along the aqueduct, marveling at the blend of Incan and Spanish architecture, the sound of water a constant, soothing presence. Kai, always eager for a good photo opportunity, found plenty of spots to capture the picturesque scenery for his Instagram. Lena was fascinated by the hydraulic engineering of the aqueduct, discussing its historical significance with our guide.

For lunch, we ventured to Ofrenda Peruvian Healthy Food. This restaurant, located in the heart of the historic center, prides itself on using organic ingredients and ancestral recipes to create vibrant and nutritious dishes. The menu was a delightful mix of traditional Peruvian flavors with a healthy twist. I opted for the lomo saltado, while Lena chose the quinoa salad with goat cheese, and Kai, ever adventurous, tried the alpaca anticuchos. The food was not only delicious but also beautifully presented, a testament to the restaurant's commitment to quality and flavor. I even tried the Quinoa soup, a millenial soup of the Incas with Chicken seasonal vegetables.

Our final attraction of the day was the Museo Casa Concha, also known as the Machu Picchu Museum. Housed in a colonial house built on the palace of the Inca Túpac Yupanqui, the museum displays hundreds of artifacts excavated by Hiram Bingham from Machu Picchu in 1911. The artifacts were returned to Peru in 2011 and are now exhibited in this fascinating museum. As we wandered through the rooms, we saw pottery, metalwork, and bone remains, each telling a story of the Inca civilization. Lena was particularly moved by the exhibit dedicated to the daily lives of the women, men, and children who served at Machu Picchu. Kai, who had been somewhat indifferent to museums in the past, was engaged by the interactive displays and the sheer number of artifacts on display. It was a powerful reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of Peru.

Before dinner, we made a quick stop at Inka's Expression, a local shop, where Lena picked up a few souvenirs for her colleagues back in Berlin. Kai, of course, was more interested in the alpaca wool sweaters, hoping to find one that would impress his friends back home.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over Cusco, we made our way to Mistura Grill Cusco for dinner. Located on the Plaza de Armas, the restaurant offered stunning views of the city's main square. The ambiance was cozy and elegant, with live music adding to the atmosphere. We started with Pisco Sours, a Peruvian classic, before diving into the menu. I ordered the canilla de cordero, while Lena chose the vegetarian option, and Kai, true to form, went for the grilled alpaca. The food was delicious, the service impeccable, and the views breathtaking. It was the perfect end to a day of exploration and discovery.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning a trip to Laguna Huaypo and Qeswachaka. I'm particularly excited about Qeswachaka, the last remaining Inca rope bridge. It's a testament to the ingenuity and engineering skills of the Inca people, and I can't wait to see it firsthand. Lena is eager to photograph the stunning landscapes surrounding Laguna Huaypo, while Kai is already planning his Instagram posts from the bridge.

Today was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing famous landmarks, but about immersing oneself in the local culture, connecting with the past, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. As I sit here, reflecting on the day's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but wonder what other secrets Cusco has in store for us.

Mahalo nui loa (thank you very much) for following along on our journey. Until tomorrow, aloha!
