Day 1: First Impressions of Cusco: A Blend of History and Modernity
Discovering Cusco's heart: Exploring Plaza Mayor, Cusco Cathedral, and Qorikancha. A family adventure blending Incan history with Spanish influence.

Arrival in Cusco: A City Steeped in History
After months of anticipation, our family adventure in Peru has officially begun! The journey from Berlin was long, but the moment we stepped onto Cusco's soil, the energy of this ancient city washed over us. The altitude definitely made itself known – a slight shortness of breath reminded us that we were over 11,000 feet above sea level. Despite the initial huffing and puffing, the excitement was palpable. I could see it in Lena's eyes, and even Kai, ever the stoic teenager, couldn't hide his curiosity. This trip is more than just a vacation; it's an immersion into a world so different from our own, a chance to connect with history in a tangible way.
Our first day was dedicated to exploring the heart of Cusco, and what better place to start than the Plaza Mayor? It's the central square, a vibrant hub surrounded by stunning architecture, a testament to the city's layered past. We took a taxi from the Sonesta Hotel Cusco, and even the short ride offered glimpses of Cusco's unique character, the narrow streets and the blend of colonial and indigenous influences already captivating us.

To walk through Cusco is to walk through the corridors of time, each stone whispering tales of empires and transformations.
The Plaza Mayor, also known as the Plaza de Armas, was bustling with activity. Locals and tourists alike strolled through the square, soaking in the atmosphere. The perfectly manicured lawns and the impressive fountain at the center provided a tranquil contrast to the lively energy of the city. I couldn't help but imagine what this place must have looked like centuries ago, during the height of the Inca Empire. Lena was already snapping photos, trying to capture the essence of the square, while Kai was more interested in the pigeons strutting about, a typical teenager's fascination with the mundane.

Our first stop was the Cusco Cathedral, a massive structure that dominates the eastern side of the Plaza Mayor. Its imposing façade, a blend of Renaissance and Baroque styles, is a testament to the Spanish colonial influence, but as we learned, its foundations and many of its stones tell a different story. Built on the site of an Inca temple, the cathedral is a powerful symbol of the collision of two worlds. It took over a century to complete, and the labor was largely provided by the indigenous population, a fact that adds a layer of complexity to its grandeur. Inside, the cathedral is a treasure trove of colonial art, with intricate carvings, gilded altars, and numerous paintings from the Cusco School. One painting, a depiction of the Last Supper featuring a guinea pig as the main course, caught my eye – a subtle yet powerful example of the blending of cultures. Lena, with her art history background, was in her element, pointing out the various artistic influences and explaining the symbolism behind the artwork. Kai, surprisingly, seemed genuinely interested, asking questions about the artists and the historical context. Perhaps this trip will spark a new interest for him.

Leaving the cathedral, we made our way to Qorikancha, the Temple of the Sun, another site that embodies the fusion of Inca and Spanish cultures. Qorikancha was once the most important temple in the Inca Empire, dedicated to the sun god Inti. Its walls were said to have been covered in gold, a testament to the Inca's reverence for the sun. Today, only remnants of the original temple remain, as the Spanish built the Convent of Santo Domingo on top of its foundations. However, the contrast between the Inca stonework and the Spanish architecture is striking, a visual representation of the clash of civilizations. The precision and skill of the Inca stonemasons are evident in the perfectly fitted stones, which have withstood centuries of earthquakes and other natural disasters. Walking through the complex, I could almost feel the energy of the ancient temple, the echoes of the rituals and ceremonies that once took place here. Lena and I tried to explain to Kai the significance of the site, the importance of the sun god in Inca cosmology, but I could tell he was more interested in the architectural details, the way the stones fit together so seamlessly.

After a morning of exploring, we were ready for lunch. Based on some research, I had made a reservation at El Jardin - Healthy Food And Coffee, a restaurant right on the Plaza Mayor. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel while enjoying the views of the square. The restaurant focuses on healthy, organic food, which was a welcome change after the rich cuisine we've been indulging in Berlin. I ordered a quinoa salad, while Lena opted for a vegetarian version of a traditional Peruvian dish. Kai, predictably, chose a burger, but even he admitted that it was one of the best he'd ever had. The service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was a great way to experience the city.

In the afternoon, we ventured into the Handicraft Center Cusco, a sprawling market where local artisans sell their wares. It was a sensory overload, a riot of colors, textures, and sounds. We wandered through the maze of stalls, admiring the intricate textiles, colorful ceramics, and unique jewelry. Lena was particularly drawn to the alpaca wool clothing, while Kai was fascinated by the Andean musical instruments. I was on the lookout for a unique souvenir, something that would remind me of our time in Cusco. After some haggling, we purchased a beautiful hand-woven tapestry, a vibrant depiction of the Andean landscape. It was a bit touristy, perhaps, but it was also a genuine expression of local artistry.

As evening approached, we made our way to Uchu Peruvian Steakhouse for dinner. I had heard great things about their modern take on traditional Peruvian cuisine, and I was eager to try it. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere. We started with some appetizers, including a delicious ceviche and some crispy empanadas. For the main course, I ordered the alpaca steak, while Lena chose the grilled fish. Kai, of course, went for the steak. The food was excellent, a perfect blend of traditional flavors and contemporary techniques. The service was attentive and friendly, and the overall experience was memorable.

Finally, to cap off our first day, we had dinner at Cicciolina, a restaurant known for its tapas and international cuisine. We opted for the formal dining area, and the 7 soles surcharge per person was well worth it for the impeccable service and elegant atmosphere. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, with Mediterranean influences in the decor. We shared a variety of tapas, each dish a burst of flavors. Kai even enjoyed the basil ice-cream for dessert, a sweet note to end the day.

It was a long and fulfilling day, a whirlwind tour of Cusco's historical and cultural highlights. As we walked back to the Sonesta Hotel, the city was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights, its ancient stones whispering tales of empires and transformations. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the surrounding areas, including Saqsaywaman, Tambomachay, and Q'enco Archaeological Complex. I'm eager to see what other wonders this region has in store for us. I'm particularly excited to visit Saqsaywaman, with its massive stones and panoramic views of Cusco. I’ve heard that the scale of the site is truly awe-inspiring, and I can’t wait to experience it firsthand. Tonight, though, I'll rest and dream of golden temples and ancient civilizations.
