Solo Exploration: Marsabit National Park Adventure
Day 1: A Kenyan Beginning: Marsabit's Embrace
First day in Marsabit National Park: a blend of culture, wildlife, and serene landscapes that promise an unforgettable solo journey.
Arrival in Marsabit: An Oasis of Green
After a long journey from Berlin, with a layover in Nairobi, I finally arrived in Marsabit National Park. The transition from the bustling city to this serene national park was striking. I'm eager to explore this unique landscape and experience the local culture. The flights were thankfully uneventful. As the plane descended towards Marsabit, I was struck by the contrast of the lush green mountain against the arid plains stretching out in every direction. It felt like landing in an oasis, a welcome change from the concrete jungle of Berlin. I was especially grateful that I remembered to pack my safari clothing; I would have felt quite out of place in my usual Berlin attire!
After landing, the drive to the park was smooth, the air was warm, and the landscape was dotted with small villages and herds of livestock. I could already feel the spirit of adventure stirring within me, a feeling I haven't felt since my surfing days back in Hawaii.

First Impressions of Marsabit National Park
Stepping into Marsabit National Park felt like entering another world. The dense montane forest, a stark contrast to the surrounding arid landscape, was teeming with life. The air was fresh and filled with the sounds of birds and insects. It was immediately clear that this was a place of unique biodiversity and natural beauty. My first impression of Marsabit National Park was one of awe and wonder. The park's diverse ecosystems, ranging from dense forests to open grasslands, are home to a wide array of wildlife. As I drove through the park, I spotted several species of birds, including some vibrant starlings and busy weavers, flitting among the trees. The air was filled with their calls, a symphony of nature that was both soothing and invigorating.
I was particularly struck by the presence of volcanic craters, known locally as gofs. These unique geological formations added a dramatic touch to the landscape, hinting at the region's fiery past. The most famous of these craters, Gof Sokorte Guda, cradles Lake Paradise, a stunning body of water surrounded by lush forest. I made a mental note to visit it tomorrow!
Lunch at Big Five Restaurant
For lunch, I decided to try the Big Five Restaurant. Situated near Nairobi National Park, I hoped it would offer a taste of local cuisine and perhaps a glimpse of wildlife while dining. The restaurant's proximity to the park certainly added to the ambiance. The Big Five Restaurant was conveniently located near the park's entrance. The food was hearty and flavorful, providing a much-needed energy boost after the long journey. I opted for a traditional Kenyan dish of grilled nyama choma (grilled meat) with sukuma wiki (collard greens) and ugali (maize porridge). The flavors were rich and satisfying, a true taste of Kenya. While I didn't spot any of the famed Big Five animals during lunch, the restaurant's atmosphere and delicious food made for a pleasant experience.

An Afternoon Exploring the Park
After lunch, I ventured deeper into the park, eager to encounter some of its famed wildlife. I wasn't disappointed. Although the thick forest made game viewing challenging, patience paid off as I spotted several interesting animals.Driving along the winding roads, I kept my eyes peeled for any signs of wildlife. The park is known for its elephants with impressive tusks, as well as the endangered Grevy's zebra. While I didn't encounter any elephants today, I was thrilled to spot a small herd of Grevy's zebra grazing peacefully in a clearing. Their distinctive stripes and graceful movements were a sight to behold. I also saw several reticulated giraffes, their long necks reaching high into the trees as they browsed on leaves.
I learned that Marsabit is also home to the greatest number of graceful Greater Kudu Antelope. Though I didn't spot any today, I'm hoping to see some tomorrow. I also learned about Ahmed, an elephant who was under 24-hour surveillance in the 70's due to his impressive tusks. It's comforting to know that Kenya is committed to protecting its wildlife.
The magic of Marsabit lies not just in its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, but in the sense of peace and solitude it offers.
Evening at Mountain Bar & Restaurant
As the sun began to set, I decided to visit the Mountain Bar & Restaurant for dinner. I was drawn by its reputation for offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. I was hoping to enjoy a relaxing meal while soaking in the beauty of Marsabit. The Mountain Bar & Restaurant was a delightful find. Perched high on a hill, it offered panoramic views of the park and the surrounding plains. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the evening air. I ordered a grilled fish dish, which was fresh and flavorful. As I ate, I watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. It was a magical moment, a perfect end to my first day in Marsabit.

Reflections on the Day
As I settled into my tent for the night, I reflected on the day's experiences. Marsabit National Park had exceeded my expectations. The park's unique landscape, diverse wildlife, and welcoming atmosphere had captivated me. I was excited to see what tomorrow would bring. My first day in Marsabit was a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and tastes. From the vibrant birdlife to the stunning volcanic craters, the park had revealed its beauty in subtle yet profound ways. The warmth of the local people and the delicious flavors of Kenyan cuisine had made me feel welcome and at home. As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about tomorrow's itinerary, which includes visits to Lake Paradise Special Campsite and Kofia mbaya hill view. I'm especially looking forward to seeing Lake Paradise, which is supposed to be one of the jewels of Northern Kenya. I'm also planning to visit the Marsabit General Shop to pick up the insect repellent that I forgot. Hopefully tomorrow brings just as much adventure and discovery as today.
I am also glad that I remembered to pack my camera, binoculars, sunscreen, and first aid kit. I also brought guidebooks on local wildlife and culture, which I am finding to be helpful. I did forget insect repellent and an extra power bank for my devices, which I hope to find tomorrow.
