Paradise Found in Marsabit

Aloha e Komo Mai! As I sit here, the African night enveloping me in its quiet embrace, I reflect on a day that felt like stepping into a hidden world. Marsabit National Park, with its unexpected lushness, has already proven to be a destination unlike any other I've experienced. It's a far cry from the arid landscapes I initially imagined, and today was all about uncovering its secrets.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast. I had packed some Hawaiian Kona coffee, and brewing it at the Lake Paradise Special Campsite was a little taste of home. The aroma mingled with the fresh, crisp air, a perfect start to the day. The campsite itself is nestled near Lake Paradise, a stunning crater lake formed from volcanic activity millions of years ago. The lake is surrounded by a thick montane forest, a rare sight in this part of Kenya. The weather in Marsabit during October is warm and a little damp, with daytime temperatures around 28°C (82°F) and nighttime temperatures around 17°C (62°F). The sun was already high, promising a warm day as I set off to explore. I made sure to apply some sunscreen, remembering Lena's constant reminders to protect my skin. I still regret forgetting the insect repellent, though.

My first stop was Lake Paradise itself. Situated about 10 km from the park's Ahmed entrance, the lake is nestled on the slopes of Mount Marsabit. The drive there was an adventure in itself, the rugged terrain demanding careful navigation. The landscape was a vibrant mix of green and gold, a testament to the area's climate. As I approached the lake, the view opened up to reveal a scene of incredible beauty. The water was a deep blue, reflecting the sky above, and the surrounding forest was teeming with life. I could hear the calls of various birds, a symphony of nature that was both soothing and invigorating.

I spent a good hour simply soaking in the atmosphere, taking photos and trying to capture the essence of this tranquil place. It's easy to see why American travelers Martin and Osa Johnson dubbed it 'paradise'. The name is fitting; there's a sense of peace and serenity here that's hard to describe. The lake is inside 'Gof Sokorte Guda', which is said to be a local Boran word for 'Big sweet water crater'. I took a moment to appreciate the stillness, a stark contrast to the bustling streets of Berlin. This solo journey was exactly what I needed, a chance to reconnect with nature and myself.

The beauty of nature is not just in what you see, but in what it makes you feel.

Next on the itinerary was Kofia Mbaya hill view. The ascent was challenging, but the panoramic view from the top was well worth the effort. From this vantage point, I could see the vast expanse of Marsabit National Park, a tapestry of forests, craters, and open plains. The sheer scale of the landscape was breathtaking, a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty of Africa. Kofia Mbaya provided a different perspective, a chance to appreciate the park's diverse ecosystems from above. I spotted various birds soaring through the sky, their calls echoing in the distance. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of pine and earth.

After a morning of exploration, it was time for lunch. I had planned to visit the Talisman Restaurant, but it seems there's been a mix-up, as that restaurant is actually located in Nairobi. Instead, I opted for a packed lunch amidst the tranquility of the park. I found a secluded spot near a small stream, the sound of the water creating a peaceful ambiance. I enjoyed a simple meal of sandwiches and fruit, savoring each bite as I took in the surroundings.

In the afternoon, I decided to do some shopping at the Marsabit General Shop. I wanted to pick up some souvenirs for Lena and Kai, something to remind them of my adventure. The shop was a bustling hub of activity, filled with locals and tourists alike. I found some beautiful hand-woven baskets and colorful beadwork, perfect gifts to bring a touch of Kenyan culture back to Berlin. I also grabbed a few snacks for the road, some local treats that I was eager to try.

As evening approached, I considered dining at the Trout Tree Restaurant or Barney's Bar and Restaurant. However, much like the Talisman Restaurant, these establishments are located in Nanyuki, not Marsabit. So I decided to have dinner at the Lake Paradise Special Campsite. The camp staff prepared a delicious meal of grilled chicken and vegetables, a hearty and satisfying end to the day. As I ate, I watched the sunset paint the sky in vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple, a truly magical sight.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to visit the Kalacha natural spring and Ichinni Farm. The spring promises a refreshing oasis in the desert landscape, while the farm offers a glimpse into local agricultural practices. I'm also planning to visit Shemeji Inn, a local bar, for a taste of the Marsabit nightlife. It's important to embrace every aspect of a destination, from its natural wonders to its cultural experiences.

Tonight, as I settle into my tent, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Marsabit National Park has exceeded all my expectations, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and peaceful solitude. It's a place that stays with you, a reminder of the power and wonder of the natural world. Aloha nui.
