Discover more about Babur Garden

Bagh-e Babur, or the Gardens of Babur, is a significant historical site in Kabul, Afghanistan, serving as the final resting place of Mughal Emperor Babur [4, 5, 7]. Established in the early 16th century, around 1504, when Babur ordered the construction of an avenue garden in Kabul, the garden has evolved through various Afghan rulers, reflecting changing tastes and influences [5]. Babur was fond of Kabul and wished to be buried there [4, 8]. Although he died in Agra, India, his remains were moved to Kabul [8]. The garden is laid out as a series of 15 stepped terraces on a hillside, following the classical charbagh design, with four quadrants divided by walkways and water channels, symbolizing the four gardens of paradise [4, 13, 15]. Visitors are greeted by a restored caravanserai, a traditional roadside inn now serving as a visitor center with archaeological finds [10, 13, 15]. The central watercourse cascades down the terraces, flanked by rose gardens, fruit trees, and herbaceous beds, many of which are species mentioned in Babur's memoirs, the Baburnama [13, 15]. Historical structures include a white marble mosque built in 1647 by Shah Jahan, who also commissioned the Taj Mahal [4, 13, 15]. The garden suffered damage during the Afghan Civil War but was restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture [5, 15]. Today, Bagh-e Babur is a public space where families gather, and tourists explore historical monuments, offering a serene environment in the city [10]. The garden hosts cultural events, celebrating Afghan traditions and cross-cultural understanding [13].
