This vital refuge provides a safe haven for a stunning array of migratory birds [5, 7]. Dauphin Island has been named one of the top four locations in North America for viewing spring migrations [5, 7].The sanctuary's diverse landscape encompasses maritime forests, marshes, dunes, a freshwater lake, a swamp, and pristine Gulf beaches [5, 6]. This variety of habitats supports an incredible range of bird species, with over 420 of Alabama's 445 documented bird species having been spotted on the island [3, 6, 7]. The island is often the first land birds encounter after crossing the Gulf of Mexico, making the sanctuary a critical stopover point for exhausted travelers [3, 5].The sanctuary was established in 1961, when the Dauphin Island Park and Beach Board recognized the need to protect migrating birds and butterflies [3, 5]. In 1967, the sanctuary officially became part of the National Audubon Society's system of wildlife sanctuaries [3, 5].Visitors can explore the sanctuary's three miles of looped trails, including a 1,000-foot accessible boardwalk leading to Gaillard Lake [3, 5, 8]. Interpretive signs along the trails offer insights into the diverse ecosystems and the interconnectedness of the local flora and fauna [5, 8]. Birdwatchers can observe long-legged waders in the brackish wetlands and migratory songbirds in the forested areas [3, 6].
