Ave Maria Grotto: A World in Miniature

The Ave Maria Grotto, often called "Little Jerusalem in Cullman," is a four-acre park on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama. It showcases 125 miniature reproductions of famous religious buildings and shrines from around the world. The grotto is the lifetime work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk known for his artistic talent and dedication. Brother Joseph, born in Bavaria in 1878, came to St. Bernard Abbey in 1892. He was initially assigned to the abbey's power plant but later found his calling in creating these miniature masterpieces. Starting in the early 20th century, he dedicated over 50 years to constructing the grotto, using a variety of materials such as cement, stones, seashells, tiles, glass, and even discarded items. His resourcefulness and attention to detail are evident in every structure. The grotto features iconic landmarks like St. Peter's Basilica, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Tower of Babel, and the Alamo, alongside depictions of biblical scenes such as the Nativity and the Last Supper. Each miniature is meticulously crafted, reflecting Brother Joseph's deep faith and artistic vision. The Grotto Church is the largest structure in the park and is built around a natural rock formation.
