Discover more about Old State Bank

Built in 1833, the Old State Bank is thought to be the oldest surviving bank building in Alabama [7]. It originally housed the Decatur branch of the Alabama State Bank [7, 8]. The building's design reflects the Federal Empire period, a popular style in the 1830s [3, 4]. Its imposing Doric columns and Jeffersonian-style architecture were intended to project the strength of the state's banking system [7, 9]. However, the bank's prosperity was short-lived. Due to a nationwide depression in 1837 and accumulating debts, the Decatur bank's franchise was revoked in 1842 [8, 9]. After its closure, the building served various purposes, including a private residence and, notably, a Civil War hospital for Union soldiers [3, 8]. Remarkably, it was one of only a handful of buildings in Decatur to survive the town's destruction during the war [3, 8]. In later years, the building housed the First National Bank of Decatur and even a boarding house [3]. In the 1930s, it was renovated as a civic meeting space [3, 7]. Today, the Old State Bank is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is undergoing a restoration project that began in May 2024 [3, 4]. While currently closed to the public, it is expected to reopen as a museum, preserving and showcasing the history of banking in Alabama and the stories of those who shaped Decatur [3, 4].
