Discover more about Richards-DAR House Museum

The Richards-DAR House Museum, a premier antebellum structure, stands as a testament to Mobile's rich history and architectural beauty. Completed in 1860 for Captain Charles G. Richards and his wife, Caroline, this Italianate townhouse remained a family residence until 1946. The Ideal Cement Company then purchased it, later donating it to the City of Mobile. Since 1973, the four local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have operated and maintained the house as a museum. The exterior of the two-story brick house showcases Mobile's finest cast iron, with allegorical figures representing the four seasons. The house also features bracketed eaves and red Bohemian glass side-lites/transom. Inside, visitors can admire the curved staircase, Carrara marble fireplace surrounds, original bronze chandeliers by Baker & Cornelius of Philadelphia, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The museum is furnished with period antiques, offering an immersive experience into the history, culture, and beauty of the Gulf South. The Richards-DAR House Museum hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including a Christmas celebration and a spring garden party. It is also available for private parties and weddings.
