The Old Mill: A Picturesque Landmark in Mountain Brook

Nestled on the banks of Shades Creek, The Old Mill offers a glimpse into Mountain Brook's rich history. Built in 1926 by real estate developer Robert Jemison Jr., it replicates Perryman's Mill, which thrived in the late 1800s. Landscape architect William H. Kessler designed the mill to evoke tranquility, making it a picturesque haven.Originally opened as a tea room in 1927, it quickly became a popular gathering place, serving meals ranging from 50 cents to $1.75. Mrs. Jemison, along with Mrs. Ross Smith and Mrs. Crawford Johnson, contributed exquisite hand-sewn table linens. During winter, the interior was adorned with Southern artisan crafts. Frances Bomer, with support from the Junior League of Birmingham, managed the attraction. The tea room closed during the Great Depression, and later attempts to revive it were unsuccessful.In 1952, Bill O'Neal acquired the property and transformed it into a private residence. The Hendersons, who purchased the mill in 1999, renovated the interior and restored the water wheel. A historical marker at the foot of the bridge on Mountain Brook Parkway commemorates the mill's significance. While the interior is not open to the public, visitors can admire the exterior from the parkway and Jemison Park Trail.
