Discover more about Hoist House at Redding Shaft Mine

The Hoist House at the Redding Shaft Mine stands as a testament to Birmingham's rich mining history. Located within Red Mountain Park, this historical landmark offers a tangible connection to the city's past. Red Mountain was once a major source of iron ore, the lifeblood of Birmingham's economy, earning it the nickname 'The Magic City'. The Redding Shaft Mine, operated by the Woodward Iron Company from 1917 to 1927, was one of the few vertical shaft mines in the Birmingham District. The Hoist House, built in a unique Spanish Mission-style, housed the machinery that lowered miners into the 384-foot deep shaft and raised tons of ore to the surface. The ore was then transported to the Woodward Furnace. Today, visitors can explore the Hoist House and imagine the sounds and activity that once filled the space. Although the headframe and other steel structures have been removed, the surviving Hoist House serves as a reminder of the hard work and sacrifices of the miners who helped build Birmingham.
