Discover more about Big Spring International Park

Big Spring International Park, often called the heart of Huntsville, Alabama, offers a blend of history, natural beauty, and international culture. The park's origins trace back to 1805 when John Hunt, the city's founder, settled near the Big Spring, a natural limestone spring providing 7 to 20 million gallons of fresh water daily. This spring served as Huntsville's primary water source until the late 1960s. In 1898, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, led by Hiram Chittenden, began renovating the spring area, laying the foundation for the park. Over the years, Big Spring evolved, incorporating gifts from other countries, including the iconic red Japanese bridge and cherry trees from Japan. Other international contributions include a light beacon from Norway, a bench from the United Kingdom, and a sundial from Germany. The park also features a marble lion, which was restored in 1995 and placed near the Big Spring Fountain. The park is divided into two sections by Church Street. The eastern section features a canal, a remnant of the Fearn Canal built in the 1820s to transport cotton. The western section boasts multiple fountains, the red pedestrian bridge, and a pond with koi fish and ducks. Visitors can stroll along paved walkways, relax on benches, and enjoy the park's serene atmosphere. Big Spring International Park hosts various events, including the Panoply Arts Festival in April and Concerts in the Park during the summer. During the holiday season, the park transforms into a winter wonderland with the Tinsel Trail, featuring decorated Christmas trees.
