Discover more about Russell Cave National Monument

Russell Cave National Monument, nestled in Bridgeport, Alabama, protects one of the most complete archaeological records of prehistoric cultures in the Southeast United States. The cave offers a glimpse into the lives of early North American inhabitants from as far back as 10,000 BCE to 1650 CE. Named after Colonel Thomas Russell, who owned the property when the area was mapped in the 1800s, the monument was established in 1961 after the National Geographic Society donated the land to the American people. Archaeological excavations in the 1950s and 60s unearthed over two tons of artifacts, revealing a cultural sequence from the Paleo-Indian period through the Mississippian period. These artifacts provide invaluable insights into the daily lives, tools, and hunting practices of the cave's early inhabitants. Visitors can explore the Gilbert Grosvenor Visitor Center, which features a museum displaying artifacts and exhibits about the cave's history. A short boardwalk leads to the cave entrance, while trails wind through the surrounding forest, offering opportunities for birdwatching and nature observation. The park is also a site on the North Alabama Birding Trail, with diverse habitats for various bird species. While recreational caving is no longer allowed, the monument offers ranger-guided tours to the mouth of the cave shelter upon request, as well as self-guided walking tours. The park's trails include the paved Nature Trail, an easy walk, and the Backcountry Trail, offering a more robust hike. Russell Cave National Monument provides a unique blend of historical exploration and natural beauty, making it a worthwhile destination for those interested in the past and the environment.
