    Discover more about Cathedral Square

Cathedral Square, located in downtown Mobile, Alabama, is more than just a park; it's a living testament to the city's layered history and enduring spirit. Situated at 300 Conti Street, the square occupies a central location bordered by North Claiborne, Dauphin, North Jackson, and Conti Streets, making it easily accessible and a focal point for both locals and tourists.Originally, this very ground served as part of Mobile's 18th-century Catholic cemetery, known as Campo Santo. Envisioned as a final resting place, Campo Santo stretched approximately 400 feet long and 300 feet wide, encompassing portions of several city blocks. As Mobile expanded, the cemetery was relocated in 1819 to what is now the Church Street Graveyard. However, remnants of Campo Santo were occasionally unearthed along Conti Street as late as the 1890s, a stark reminder of the lives that once lay beneath.Following the cemetery's relocation, the area transformed into a commercial hub, filled with various buildings. This commercial phase continued until 1979 when the buildings were demolished to create a public park, offering an open space that faced the majestic Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. The current park layout was implemented in 1996. The park's design features brick sidewalks that echo the walls and nave of the cathedral, while a semicircular colonnade with fountains reflects the apse. This mirroring effect enhances the visual appeal and creates a sense of unity between the park and the cathedral, making it a unique and memorable space.Throughout the year, Cathedral Square comes alive with a variety of events and activities. From art shows and live music to seasonal festivals and community gatherings , the square serves as a social hub for Mobile.
