Step into the Mann Wildlife Learning Museum and embark on a journey through the diverse ecosystems of North America and Alabama. This 28,000-square-foot museum, located within the Montgomery Zoo, houses over 270 displays featuring meticulously preserved wildlife specimens. The museum's collection originated from the lifelong passion of George Mann, a renowned outdoorsman and conservationist. Mann dedicated his life to studying wildlife and creating realistic dioramas that showcase animals in their natural habitats. The museum's exhibits feature a wide array of North American fauna, including deer, bears, foxes, cats, and various fish and bird species. Visitors can explore exhibits showcasing the deer family, bear family, skunk species, and various quail, grouse, and wild turkey species of North America. The museum also features displays of foxes, cats, mountain mammals, and mammals from the plains. A unique 'danger section' highlights poisonous insects, venomous reptiles, and toxic plants, educating visitors about potential hazards in the wild. Interactive elements, such as touch-and-feel displays, allow visitors to engage with the exhibits and learn about the textures and characteristics of different animals. The museum also features authentic fossils, including saber-tooth tiger remains, mastodon tusks, and woolly mammoth bones, providing a glimpse into the prehistoric past. Originally opened in Opelika, Alabama, the Mann Wildlife Learning Museum was purchased by the Montgomery Area Zoological Society in 2003 and moved to its current location within the Montgomery Zoo. The museum continues to serve as a valuable educational resource, promoting wildlife conservation and appreciation for the natural world.
