Discover more about Town of Spectre

Jackson Lake Island, near Millbrook, Alabama, offers a unique experience that blends cinematic history with natural beauty. This 60-acre island on the Alabama River is home to the remnants of the fictional town of Spectre, created for Tim Burton's 2003 film, 'Big Fish'. Built in 2003, the town of Spectre was intentionally designed to appear timeworn and slightly eerie. After filming wrapped, the set was left standing, and over the years, the buildings have weathered, adding to the town's ghostly charm. Visitors can wander through the skeletal frames of the buildings, including the church and several homes, and imagine themselves in the movie. The iconic entrance, marked by a line of shoes dangling overhead, still stands, inviting visitors to add their own footwear to the display. Today, the town is inhabited by a large herd of free-roaming goats, who have become a beloved part of the island's identity. These friendly creatures can be seen wandering through the streets of Spectre, adding a touch of whimsy to the already unique setting. Visitors are welcome to interact with the goats, offering scratches behind the ears and capturing memorable photos. Beyond the movie set and the goats, Jackson Lake Island offers a variety of outdoor activities. The calm waters of Jackson Lake are perfect for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. Anglers can try their luck at catching crappie, catfish, and bass. Primitive campsites are available for those who want to spend a night under the stars. The island also features picnic tables, a covered picnic pavilion, and a playground, making it a family-friendly destination. Jackson Lake Island wasn't always an island. It was purchased in 1970, and the construction of a nearby dam led to rising water levels, transforming the area into an island. The Bright family has owned and operated the island since 2015, preserving the movie set and welcoming visitors to experience its magic.
