Discover more about Abram Mordecai Historical Marker

The Abram Mordecai Historical Marker, located at 420 Columbus St in Montgomery, Alabama, stands as a tribute to Abram Mordecai (1755-1849), a pivotal figure in the early development of the region. Born in Pennsylvania, Mordecai settled in Georgia in 1783 and became a successful trader among the Cusseta Indians. He was the first U.S. citizen to settle in what became Montgomery County in 1785. Living and marrying among the Creeks, he established a trading house for skins, furs, and medicinal barks two miles from Line Creek. In 1802, Mordecai installed a cotton gin manufactured by Lyons & Barnett of Georgia on the Alabama River near his trading post. This was the first cotton gin in Alabama. He ginned his own cotton and that of his Indian neighbors until his equipment was burned. Mordecai also served in the War of 1812 and was a trail guide for Gen. John Floyd during the Creek War in 1813. The marker serves as a reminder of the interactions between early settlers and the Creek Nation, as well as Mordecai's contribution to the cotton industry in Alabama. The marker is located near Old Alabama Town, a collection of restored 19th-century buildings.
