Getting There

  • Driving

    From Mt Hope, Alabama, head south on AL-157 S/AL-33 S. Turn right onto Co Rd 303. Continue onto Co Rd 3 for several miles. The Thompson Trailhead will be on your right. There is no fee to park at the trailhead.

  • Walking

    From nearby campgrounds along Thompson Creek Trail (approximately 3 miles from the trailhead), follow the marked trail system. The path leads directly to the Thompson Trailhead parking area and information kiosk. Ensure you have a map of the Sipsey Wilderness trails.

Thompson Trailhead provides access to the Sipsey Wilderness, a 24,922-acre natural area within Bankhead National Forest. Known as the 'Land of 1000 Waterfalls,' the Sipsey Wilderness offers a unique landscape carved by the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River. This area is characterized by its ancient sandstone canyons, spring-fed streams, and diverse ecosystems. The trailhead itself is located off NW Road 3, a few miles from Kinlock Road.
