Driving

Cathedral Caverns State Park is located at 637 Cave Road, Woodville, AL 35776. From Huntsville, it's a scenic 30-minute drive southeast. From Scottsboro, it is about a 30-minute drive southwest. From Grant, AL, it is about a 10-minute drive. Ample free parking is available on-site near the Visitor Center. Check in at the Welcome Center 15 minutes prior to your scheduled tour. Reservations are recommended.

Cathedral Caverns State Park, nestled in the foothills of northern Alabama, invites visitors to explore a subterranean world of natural wonders. Originally known as 'Bat Cave,' its colossal entrance, measuring 126 feet wide and 25 feet high, is among the largest in the world. The cave was renamed Cathedral Caverns due to its cathedral-like appearance, adorned with stalagmites and stalactites that resemble ornate columns and sculptures.The journey through the cave follows a smooth, concrete walkway, making it accessible for most visitors. Inside, the cave maintains a comfortable 60 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. One of the most breathtaking sights is 'Goliath,' one of the world's largest stalagmites, standing 45 feet tall with a circumference of 243 feet. Other notable formations include the 'Frozen Waterfall,' a massive flowstone formation, and the 'Stalactite Forest,' where countless stalactites create an otherworldly landscape. The 'Big Room' is so large it could fit a football field.Beyond the cave, the 493-acre park offers hiking trails ranging from easy to moderate, providing scenic views of the surrounding landscape. Gem mining is a popular activity for all ages, offering the chance to sift through dirt and sand to uncover various gemstones. For those wishing to extend their stay, the park has a campground with improved campsites, primitive tent camping areas, and tiny cabins.Cathedral Caverns has a rich history. First explored in 1953 by Jacob (Jay) Gurley, he later purchased the cave in 1955 and opened it to the public. The State of Alabama acquired the caverns in 1987, officially opening it as a state park in 2000.
